Wanamaker - 3 bedroom (19L)

Nice building but a few things
1. Package room only open until 9- make friends with the doorman to have them open it later to you
2. Pool is closed from September - April/May so you never really can use it
3. The bedroom split is not ideal and also there is no external bathroom so people have to go in your rooms to go to the bathroom
4. The second and third room share a thermostat - big issue if you guys are not on the same page. We bought separate heaters and fans because the management did not allow to separate the thermostat or give us a fan
5. Management can be very unreasonable at times (see #4)

Perfect location for Wharton students

Wanamaker's location cannot be beat. It is in the center of Rittenhouse, near a ton of great bars and restaurants. The building is very convenient to Wharton - 25 min walk or ~10-15 minute bus or uber. The doormen are friendly and professional. The units vary a lot because the units are condos, but all of them have floor to ceiling windows that let in a lot of light.

Spacious but old

Spacious studio but old kitchen. Front desk is not the most friendly. Amazing location for Wharton students as it is close to most things.

Decent location, decent building in need of refurbishment

Building management and staff are really nice and professional. The building is just a bit old and could use an update, especially the 33rd floor.

Also, each unit is individually owned so its hard to compare across units.

Great experience in Wanamaker

I love this apartment! It's beautiful, spacious, and really well located. I rent directly from my landlord, so the whole process is smooth. It's fun to be in a building with so many classmates too!

Great location, great apartment

The apartment is modern, central and convenient. 24 hours porter, the management company fixes things if they are broken in the apartment. I am very happy with it.

Love the Wanamaker

Wanamaker has been great so far - the building is in such a convenient location, the doormen are incredibly friendly and helpful. I also love living in a building with so many other students. I'm constantly running in to people and it's easy to coordinate meeting up, whether its for group projects or social activities.
(Note that I rent directly from my landlord, so don't have to deal with the management company)

Wanamaker Review

I really enjoy the Wanamaker building. Here's a run-down of my pros(+)/cons(-):
+ Excellent location close to campus and close to Rittenhouse activities. I feel like I'm at the center of everything.
+ Social atmosphere with lots of Wharton students in the building. Great for building relationships and Ubering to campus.
+ Relatively affordable -- feels like a good value
+ Good neighborhood amenities: Revolution Taco, Irish Pub, Vernick an upscale bar and a few other bar options are all across the street; several dry cleaners <1 block away; 7-Eleven <2 blocks away, the other major apartment buildings are all nearby; Rittenhouse Park is 1 block away
+ Management is pretty hands-off, but they're institutional so imagine they would be responsive with anything needed
+ Excellent views of the city if you're on a higher floor
+ Gym is functional but not great -- if you're a workout buff this won't cut it
+ Rooftop with pool is great for socializing in the warm months of the year
- Fully immersed in the "Wharton bubble". You can definitely get your quiet time in your apartment, but you are almost always going to run into someone you know coming in/out.
- Older building with wide variance in unit quality. Some have old carpets, tired finishes, etc.
- Walls are thin (problematic if you have a roommate or a penchant for playing loud music)
- Utility bills are unusually high

Rittenhouse Square Reviews

Walnut street is very safe - there's always people around and it's well lit. The neighborhood includes all of the fun aspects of living in Philadelphia - tons of access to food and bars, nearby grocery stores/markets, access to the parks and the Schuylkill River Trail
Very close to fun restaurants/bars/shops. Close to the subway as well as the train station (suburban station).
Rittenhouse is the safest part of Philly. It's a very "happening" part of town—lots of restaurants and bars on every street. At the same time, it's right next to more residential neighborhoods to walk around in and explore. It's a great place to live relatively close to the law school but with a degree of separation so as not to get trapped in the law school bubble.
The neighborhood is both quiet and lively. There is so much around, but I have never had an issue sleeping or studying because there is too much noise. The broad street line is a 10-15 minute walk away and we are close to shopping, food, the park, and the river trail. Has everything within a 10-15 walk.
This neighborhood has everything I need within walking distance. Shops, grocery stores, parks, the subway and trolley, post office. You name it. It's very safe and extremely quiet, which helps when I'm trying to study. The Rittenhouse Square area is really the best place to live in Philly if you don't mind paying a little more.
I love this neighborhood and knew I wanted to live here when beginning my apartment search. The park is one of my favorite places in the city, and I love being able to easily access all the restaurants and shopping nearby. It's also an easy (~20 minute) walk to Penn Law, and the walking commute has always been a nice and peaceful part of my day.

Spruce Street in particular is great - it's a little south of the square, so is quieter/shielded from a lot of the traffic that the neighborhood gets, but it's not out of the way or far away. There's a Starbucks, a grocery store (Rittenhouse Market), and a few corner stores (Four Seasons and Food & Friends) within a 2-3 minute walk of my apartment.
Love the neighborhood, Rittenhouse Square is beautiful and we are so close to the more commercial areas like Walnut Street while not being in the center of the craziness. Plus we are within walking distance of public transportation including 10 minutes from the 15/16 street PATCO station. I personally think it is one of the best areas of Philly to live in.
Rittenhouse Square has a park in the center surrounded by a bookstores, restaurants, and a public library. It is open to pets and often has open art / food markets on the weekends. It is close to the Broad Street Line and PATCO. There are many families who live in the area. It is affordable compared to other major cities (NYC, DC, Boston), but there are certainly more affordable areas in Philadelphia, simply without the luxury of being so close to Center City.
