Great location, big apartments

Wanamaker House is in a great location - 2 blocks from Rittenhouse Square, close to tons of restaurants and bars, and an easy walk or bus ride to Penn's campus. The 2-bedroom units have huge living spaces and big windows, and having 2 en-suite bathrooms is great. The front desk staff are generally friendly and helpful.
The downside is that the gym is quite outdated and there is no good common space. The hospitality suite is very old and can only be used with a reservation / payment. They are planning a renovation of the common space in the next 1-2 years, so that may change.

From the old, the newer

From the old buildings its one of the best. The gym is not bad and you don't feel it's such a big building. Apartments inside might be old but they are very functional, spacious and comfortable. I am very happy living here.

Modern townhouse, part of Wanamaker

Benefits of a walk-up townhouse, plus the management staff of a large apartment complex. Amenities are not as good as some of the other more modern apartment complexes in the area.

Great location!

Excellent place to live for UPenn students or young professionals that work in the city center area. It's a walkable distance to dozens of restaurants, bars, and schools. The staff are always friendly and keep the place secure 24/7.

There is a small gym upstairs (think small hotel sized) with a few treadmills, ellipticals, and small machines. The pool is only available from May through September, so I've yet to enjoy it.

Your stay at the Wanamaker may be a bit dependent on your unit. Some are newly furnished (ours is not), so that's a plus! But, it likely means your rent will be a bit higher.

Apartment - disintegrating; no help from mgmt

We had multiple problems such as (i) shower heads not releasing warm water or water with pressure, (ii) cupboards not straight or hanging off the hinge

Our closet door FELL on one of us, and broke into two. It has now been 8 months since we have told management - who say the owners are not going to fix it. This response was only gotten AFTER we withheld rent because the management would just say "we have contacted the owners". They are STILL refusing to fix the door even though it will be a full 16 months before we move out

Pool - NOT open during the school year; Gym is small; Management is unresponsive until you threaten them; Two of the rooms share one thermostat - so if one roommate is hot and one is cold, only the person that has the thermostat in their room can change it

Gas is VERY expensive during the winter. Costs of $300/month

DO NOT RECOMMEND ALLAN DOMBE OR WANAMAKER

Great Value, Perfect Location

The Wanamaker is located in the perfect location for Wharton students. It´s an easy 25 minute walk straight up Walnut St or 10 min. uber to campus. The building has decent amenities with a small gym, common room, outdoor pool (only open in the summer though) and fantastic set of doormen. The apartments can vary in quality depending on how recently they were renovated. I was lucky to find one that was renovated just before I moved in. The building is undergoing common area remodeling which should be finished by next fall - the lobby and floor hallways are being redone. Plenty of space in the apartment and much more than I was used to coming from New York. For the price, it is very good value. Lots of Wharton students in the building, but not exclusively Wharton. Only down side is they don´t let you sublet the apartment if you sign a 2 year lease.

Great

Building location is probably the best in Philadelphia. Units are very well lit given the large windows. If you’re lucky you could get 1. a great view, and 2. a renovated unit. I got both. Wharton community is great (more than 100 Wharton students live in the building). This is great for ridesharing. No social events happen amongst Wharton community living in the building. This is mainly because the common area on the roof is old. It is being renovated tho; works are scheduled to be complete by Summer 2019. Only negatives are that 1. there’s inconsistencies amongst state of units across the building, and 2. gym is very very small.

Rittenhouse Square Reviews

Walnut street is very safe - there's always people around and it's well lit. The neighborhood includes all of the fun aspects of living in Philadelphia - tons of access to food and bars, nearby grocery stores/markets, access to the parks and the Schuylkill River Trail
Very close to fun restaurants/bars/shops. Close to the subway as well as the train station (suburban station).
Rittenhouse is the safest part of Philly. It's a very "happening" part of town—lots of restaurants and bars on every street. At the same time, it's right next to more residential neighborhoods to walk around in and explore. It's a great place to live relatively close to the law school but with a degree of separation so as not to get trapped in the law school bubble.
The neighborhood is both quiet and lively. There is so much around, but I have never had an issue sleeping or studying because there is too much noise. The broad street line is a 10-15 minute walk away and we are close to shopping, food, the park, and the river trail. Has everything within a 10-15 walk.
This neighborhood has everything I need within walking distance. Shops, grocery stores, parks, the subway and trolley, post office. You name it. It's very safe and extremely quiet, which helps when I'm trying to study. The Rittenhouse Square area is really the best place to live in Philly if you don't mind paying a little more.
I love this neighborhood and knew I wanted to live here when beginning my apartment search. The park is one of my favorite places in the city, and I love being able to easily access all the restaurants and shopping nearby. It's also an easy (~20 minute) walk to Penn Law, and the walking commute has always been a nice and peaceful part of my day.

Spruce Street in particular is great - it's a little south of the square, so is quieter/shielded from a lot of the traffic that the neighborhood gets, but it's not out of the way or far away. There's a Starbucks, a grocery store (Rittenhouse Market), and a few corner stores (Four Seasons and Food & Friends) within a 2-3 minute walk of my apartment.
Love the neighborhood, Rittenhouse Square is beautiful and we are so close to the more commercial areas like Walnut Street while not being in the center of the craziness. Plus we are within walking distance of public transportation including 10 minutes from the 15/16 street PATCO station. I personally think it is one of the best areas of Philly to live in.
Rittenhouse Square has a park in the center surrounded by a bookstores, restaurants, and a public library. It is open to pets and often has open art / food markets on the weekends. It is close to the Broad Street Line and PATCO. There are many families who live in the area. It is affordable compared to other major cities (NYC, DC, Boston), but there are certainly more affordable areas in Philadelphia, simply without the luxury of being so close to Center City.
