Duke Housing Survey Review

I have had a pretty good experience at this apartment complex. It is within walking distance of the medical school and hospital, has reasonable prices for the space you get and has very low pet fees. It also has a large gym space and has many amenities for residents. Management is less responsive than I would like, but maintenance responds quickly and has fixed all of the problems I have had with the apartment.

Good, but pricey

Great location (very convenient), nice apartments, convenient maintenance portal, and nice perks, but pricey for Durham.

Lofts Review

I love the layout of the apartment and the large amount of space in most rooms. I think the location is great and parking for both guests and current residents is outstanding. Being close to small eateries and a UPS (for amazon returns) is also a plus! On the down side, management and maintenance are very slow. It sometimes takes over a week and multiple attempts at communication to solve a problem (unless it is urgent). The apartment, while nice, also does not have the most updated appliances. Definitely worth touring to see if it will suit your needs.

Lofts at Lakeview

apartments are beautiful and spacious with up to date renovations.
location is excellent: 10-15 min walk to campus and 1 min walk to eateries (right next to erwin exchange) and short drive to other popular places in durham

only con is that the leasing office isn't the most friendly/helpful at times

I only live here because the other two nearby are more expensive

1) Management is incompetent. They do not communicate and there is no manager in house so nothing major will ever get resolved. I had leaking windows and every time I went to the office it was like they had never heard about the problem. Took forever to get fixed and they were always giving me attitude as if it was exorbitant for me to expect windows that don't leak.

2) Personally I think these are overpriced but you can't really do anything about that. They are less expensive than Trinity and Erwin Flats for the amount of space in the apartment.

3) Gym facility is small and has old equipment.

4) Don't get conned by the "movie theater" you can only use it during business hours

5) Floors and walls are so thin I can hear other people's phone alarms and street conversations. Can literally hear people's shoes hitting the pavement if they're running down the street. Sounds like an elephant is living upstairs even if someone is walking lightly/normally.

What I like: spacious floor plan, walking distance to food and school

Great

Really convenient to walk to campus as a medical student and great space for the price. The gym is nice except sometimes the machines don't work. There are multiple study spaces in the leasing office (2 conference rooms, 2 cubicles, and some tables). The leasing office staff are usually pretty responsive. Overall, I really enjoy living here.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
