Great for law students

Overall, really enjoy living in Shoreland - it's my second year here. It's very convenient for law students, given the 171 and other shuttles that run between campus and Shoreland. The building and our apartment are very nice and new. We probably overpay a little, and certainly you can find cheaper apartments in HP, but you're paying for the convenience, better security, etc. than you'd get in a walk-up.

Shoreland

Great apartment! A well-managed place with the charm of being a historic building and conveniently newly renovated. Lots of other students live here so it is not uncommon to see friends around common areas or when taking the bus. Amenities are great as well, however if you are wanting a large gym in your apartment complex, this one is small.

Comfortable & convenient

Living at Shoreland isn't cheap, but I think the price is justified. The building is beautiful, our apartment is nice, and Mac has been responsive to maintenance requests. You get a ton of convenience because there are a lot of other law students living in the building, and the bus stop is right outside. You also are able to easily walk by the lake or walk to Philz/Starbucks if you ever want to just get out of the house a bit.

Close to School, Good Amenities

I love being so close to school. The staff is very friendly and the place is always clean. My apartments overlooks the lake and is quite spacious.

Worth It

I stayed at locally-owned walk-up apartment last year in an effort to save money. After a year of repeated plumbing problems and having to listen to horrible fights between my neighbors, I decided to try Shoreland. The management has been great. Carpets are constantly being cleaned, windows washed, everything well maintained. Management actually does follow up on weed complaints, which is wonderful, and is always friendly and courteous in person. Gym is pretty small and basic, but it does the job. The Amazon Hub locker makes package pick up easy (no more stolen packages!), and I always feel safe. The 171, which has a stop at Shoreland, provides easy bus transportation to the law School. I'm really glad I made the switch. It's so expensive here, but feeling safe and having a predictable environment is really worth it to me.

One other note: I was going to bring a car, but decided not to in part because parking here is SO expensive. For my purposes, it's actually cheaper per month just to Uber as needed. Now that I'm here, I think I could have always found a spot with street parking (note that it's not parallel, unlike most places here), but I am honestly still glad that I don't have to deal with the hassle of a car.

The wall in my bedroom is a bit thin, but in my experience, I don't know if that's something you can get around easily in apartments.

Solid

If you want to be in Hyde Park, the building is pretty great if not a little overpriced. Maintenance sometimes slow to respond but generally a good experience.

Very Convenient Apartment

Shoreland is an extremely convenient place for law students. The shuttle stops right in front, there is an in-unit washer/dryer, and there is central air conditioning. There are better value places in the neighborhood. but Shoreland is worth the premium. Note that the service elevator can only be booked in strict two hour windows, which makes move-in furniture deliveries a challenge.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
