Treated well great building

Have lived in Hyde park for a while and Mac is by and large an awful landlord. However, the Shoreland is an exception. Friendly staff, clean, new, etc.

Elevator issues April 28, 2024

On Saturday, April 28th, during the afternoon to evening, all the elevators were down for repair for several hours. I want to commend the Receptionist Tiwanna Brown for her professionalism, assistance with directions on how to navigate the stairs, and above all the sincere concern she demostrated towards my family who had arrived from out of town to visit me for my birthday. I am a senior and without Ms. Brown's kindness, not with just me and my family, but with all the other tenants and delivery people who entered The Shoreland only to find the elevators down, the situation would have been unbearable. It was a large responsibility to put on Ms. Brown shoulder of giving attention to each and every need of all, and she definitely moved my anxiety from a 10 (high to a 1 (low). Please thank Ms. Brown for me on behalf of me and all those who were assisted during the evening hours when the unpredictable situation took place. Thank you.

Lessee

This apartment is generally clean and quiet, very comfortable to live. The bus stop is in front of the gate, which is convenient and safe to go to the school. It's also convenient to buy groceries as Trader Joe's is in 15-min walk away.

Great Building, Okay Management Company

Excellent location--close to Promontory Point, Hyde Park shops and restaurants, and the UChicago campus. The historic building is beautiful with lots of charm and the apartment is spacious. Front desk staff are very friendly, and it is great to have a free package service and a 24/7 front desk staff member on site. However, maintenance can be slow to respond to issues and management seems understaffed which causes delays in their response time and availability.

Shoreland

I like that many other law students live in the building. I know many other buildings have issues with stolen packages and that has never been an issue because of the Amazon Hub / front desk management. Also, the 171 picks up outside the building, so in the winter you can get to the law school door-to-door without spending much time in the cold. Also, the proximity to the lake/Point is really nice. Staff at the building is very friendly. Amenities are not great, but the units are updated/clean and many of them have nice lake views.

Shoreland

Positives:
- Responsive management (have heard bad things about other MAC properties, but Shoreland is the location of MAC headquarters.
- Many amenities: gym (almost always empty, treadmills, barbell rack, a few machines), pet spa, dry cleaning, lounge that you can reserve for free for social events.
- In-unit washer/dryer in the apartment.
- 24/7 front desk.
- You get to set your own heating and you DON'T PAY for heating, which really helps for the winter; you can leave heat on 24/7 if you want.
- Great location: right next to Promontory Point (where a lot of social events are held) and the lakefront trail.

Negatives:
- 171 bus is not super reliable: it is nice that the bus stop is right outside your apartment, but you have to be careful if you intend to take the 171 to class every day, because it is frequently delayed.
- Rent is on the higher side: good if you live with your partner or a roommate, pricy if you live by yourself.
- If you're talking at above average volume in the main room, people can probably hear you in the hallway if they're trying to eavesdrop.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
