Shoreland

Very convenient for the law school because the bus stops outside - although the bus could be more consistent. Location is decent for Hyde Park, although better food options would be nice. Overall very nice building, great to have a lot of friends nearby.

Shoreland

I love living at Shoreland! It is about a 15 min bus ride to the Law School, and the Regents Express also takes you from the Law School to Shoreland. If you have a car, do NOT get parking--there's so much street parking nearby. I have a dog, and there's a park right across the street, and the neighborhood feels very safe. My partner is also in law school and commutes downtown, which is about 35-40 minutes one-way, and it is feasible. Our utilities are a flat rate, and we pay for internet separately.

Pretty good, pretty expensive

Overall nice, spacious apartments. Good amenities, great staff, great access to public transportation, good community. Only downside is the cost but it’s worth it if you can afford it without sacrificing other necessities.

Great Building, Okay Management Company

Excellent location--close to Promontory Point, Hyde Park shops and restaurants, and the UChicago campus. The historic building is beautiful with lots of charm and the apartment is spacious. Front desk staff are very friendly, and it is great to have a free package service and a 24/7 front desk staff member on site. However, maintenance can be slow to respond to issues and management seems understaffed which causes delays in their response time and availability.

Shoreland is great

I've really enjoyed my time living at the Shoreland so far! Hyde Park is a great neighborhood and the Shoreland is a great place to live. The units are quiet and spacious and you're right by a park so you have plenty of green space around and you're also in walking distance to the lakeshore trail! Its also a short 2-block walk to get to the bus I take that drops me off at Union Station!

Great location and lots of space

Great location with easy access to Promontory Point and 171 Bus. Quick walk to Trader Joes. Extremely clean! Just wish the gym were a bit bigger.

Shoreland Review

I've been happy with Shoreland! Lots of law students in building, walking distance to law school and right on bus line, nice units and good overall complex.

Very comfortable with good amenities, a little pricey

I feel very comfortable and safe at The Shoreland. I love having in-unit washer and dryer (this was very important to me) and dishwasher, as well as great central heating and AC. The front desk staff is very friendly and I feel safe and at-home here. I also loving living in the same building as other law students. Yes, it feels a little dorm-like in some ways, but it's really nice to have a built-in community especially when it comes to studying/doing work together in the winter.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
