Great building, though standardized

I very much enjoy this building. It is built for people with tight schedules who need convenience. However, the modern decorating and the fact that almost every apartment is exactly the same makes me feel like I'm in a cookie cutter place. However, there is really little else to complain about. The apartment is brand new, spacious, and clean. The management is responsive. They have maintenance staff that answers the day anything breaks. The gym is large and new, there is free coffee, there is even a dog was station and a mini theater. On top of all that, it's a 10 minute walk (or one stop on the red) from union station. That's very convenient! The metro is only a block away and there's a grocery store across the street. This building makes everything in my personal life take as little time as possible, which is a great plus.

Amazing apartment community

First and M is the best apartment complex I've ever lived at. The building is very new and comes with top notch amenities. The building has hands down the best apartment gym I've ever seen. I've enjoyed living in NOMA, but it's not for everyone. Luckily, the apartment complex is very close to the NOMA metro stop.

Best place I've ever lived!

First & M is definitely one of the best apartment buildings I've ever lived in. The staff was awesome. The ladies in the leasing office were very friendly. The front desk staff was great as well. Very helpful and knowledgeable. The lobby area and shared resources were very clean and functional. The Gym is the biggest apartment gym in DC. If you live at First & M, you most likely won't need a gym membership. The theater is great. My apartment was beautiful - great design. I had a studio and loved that, when people came to visit, they thought I lived in a one-bedroom. It was a very big studio, and they had a separate space for my bedroom which was great. T. Appliances were great, hard wood floors were great, and it was very quiet in that space.I would definitely recommend First & M if you can afford it.

Great amenities

The Avalon at First and M NE is perfect for those seeking great value for their money. The amenities are outstanding. I always feel like I'm on vacation when I spend time on the rooftop! I also use the gym almost every day. It's so convenient to just walk downstairs and have a full-service gym and yoga studio available to use. Plus, I never have to wait for a machine.

Great place to live

I Have Been living here for almost two years now and love calling first and m home. My 1 bedroom apt is great. I work out in the gym multiple times per week and use the rooftop pool frequently during the summer. The apartment is 1 block from the metro which is really convenient.

Terrible location, great apartment complex

First, I am giving this a 9 just because the complex itself is great. If you work nearby or have always lived in this area, you will love it. I do not like this area and am moving at the end of my lease because I hate the area. The only plus about the location is the proximity to the NOMA metro stop so you can get out of NOMA.

However, First & M is a great complex. Its pricey, as are all of the "modern" accommodations around here, but it is worth the money for the amenities. Really the best gym I have ever had in any apartment complex. I don't use the pool. The business center is actually functional, whereas every other place I have lived had terrible old computers and printers. The rooms are nice, though a little more basic than you would expect for the price. Space is small, but I like how the studio has a separate bedroom area. Never had one issue with management. Everyone at the desk is great. They need to move this down to the hill and I would definitely rent again!

Its a pretty sweet deal

Living two blocks from the office definitely has its perks. The neighborhood is fully equipped with a grocery store, Starbucks, Pet store, and yoga studio. Concierge in the building is great. They handle everything from letting the dog walkers in to receiving dry goods.

Guinea Pigs

So I moved into this building when it first opened and we were kind of the guinea pigs because NOMA wasn't traditionally an area in DC for high-rise apartments. I loved it though because we got a brand new amazing apartment for a really good deal (literally the best in DC value wise). The apartments are finished impeccable, closets are amazing and our lobby and common areas always make my guests jealous. This is an amazing apartment building in a very up and coming neighborhood in DC. I was initially skeptical about moving here but over the years I have seen how this area has become flooded with young professionals. No regrets

You can probably do better...

The building makes a good first impression and looks pretty fancy. For the money, it's not a bad place to live. It is also close to shopping and quite centrally located. I try not to walk back late at night - I have been stopped/approached on the street before.
The walls are thin, however, and I have woken up in the middle of the night because of noise - especially on weekends. People will take advantage of the rooftop (which is beautiful) during the summer and it can be quite crowded/noisy.
I have heard complaints that the appliances are cheap, but mine were brand new and are working fine.

NoMa Reviews

I don't venture too far outside of the few blocks of NoMa because outside of the neighborhood isn't as safe. However, the city has done a lot to revamp the area in the past few years, so there are new restaurants and bars opening up. I also live right across the street from the metro, which makes the rest of the city much more accessible.
NoMa is approximately a 35 minute commute to GWU. However, my roommate works on the hill which is less than 10 minutes away. There is a Harris Teeter connected to the building so you don't even have to go outside in order to shop for groceries. The area is still up and coming, so some of the surrounding streets don't seem very safe. However, it is getting better each and every day and it is easy to avoid those streets.
It's an up and coming neighborhood though I live in the very nice part of it. It's rough across North Capitol, but there's nothing over there to go to so I never run into any issues. There's a big dog park as well as plenty to do and eat at Union Market.
Neighborhood is okay. Everything is walkable. Bars/restaurants/grocery stores are super close by. Parking is usually available. Super safe (just don't go near the NY Ave Wendys after dark)
NoMa is up and coming - there are not too many places to eat/socialize in the evenings but the neighborhood is close enough to H Street that you don't feel too stranded.
It's growing like crazy but seriously lacks on the dining/nightlife portion. I like the geography and with the REI opening I'm hoping the nightlife will shift as well.
Fairly safe, though I wouldn't roam around a lot at night. It's certainly a transitioning neighborhood. Lots of people with dogs, big and small.
Noma is a cool area with young professionals mainly and has a lot of food/bar options! It's about 30 min from campus via metro, 20 min driving, (don't walk to campus). The apartment itself is super safe, as is the immediately surrounding area. But it isn't safe to walk west of the area or too far north either.
