Worth the money

It falls on the expensive side but the money is worth it.

Top notch place to live in

Excellent in terms of safety, amenities, convenience, travel, and living.
On the higher side of the rent spectrum, but offers peace of mind from security hassles.

ok but some issues

its ok, but there have been minor issues with maintenance, the downstairs coffee machine almost never works, and they raised our rates in the first few months of living there, and it is already a very expensive place to live. upside is that it is very safe and very close to campus.

Comfortable place to live

Apartments are very new, so the utilities and finishings inside are very nice. Location is also close to Duke. The gym is nice, the pool is very small. No noise issues. Management is kind but still getting used to running the place. Small annoyances for a "luxury apartment complex" like a required trash fee and management will not hold mail in the office. Note only 1 out of 3 buildings gets covered parking, the others get outdoor parking. Initially had some security issues but none recently.

Great experience at the Flats

We choose the Flats over other housing options for the following reasons:
-Brand new building in excellent condition and spacious, modern floor plans (tons of light too)
-Ability to walk to Fuqua
-More affordable rent than 9th Street area
-Great management team

Overall satisfied

I love my apartment itself -- spacious, lots of light, brand-new with brand-new appliances. Amenities are also nice -- the gym and pool are on the smaller side (comparable buildings like Trinity, Lofts, Berkshire have larger/nicer gyms and pools) but get the job done.

The management could definitely be better. Communication can be slow and inconsiderate. They try their best, but it's obvious that it's a new complex and they're still learning the ropes.

Overall have had a good experience and will probably stay for another year.

Live at the flats!

I absolutely love living at the flats. The building is brand new, has ample amenities, and is less than a 15 minute walk from school. Our apartment is large - 1100 square feet for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom which makes it easy to live with any roommate. While there are certainly cheaper places to live in Durham, the flats is certainly good bang for your buck. Similar apartment complexes in other cities are at least double the price. Other apartments nearby in Durham may be a bit closer to school but are older buildings and the rent is as expensive if not more expensive. If the flats is in your price range, I think it truly is the best place to live!!

Solid choice

Pros: Convenient location, new/modern design & appliances, trees/greenery is beautiful and unique compared to similar apartment buildings

Downsides: inconsistent communication with management, communal areas are not serviced frequently enough

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
