West Village reviews and highlights
- huge gym compared to most apartment gyms
- easy access to parking garages
- perfectly located in downtown Durham
- high ceilings, modern kitchens with granite countertops, wood floors, and exposed brick walls and balconies
Great location, beautiful unit, not great management
West Village has an unparalleled location and the units are beautiful! If you’re moving from a bigger city (we moved from boston), rents are great too. The management isn’t that friendly or helpful but if you can avoid needing their help, it’s a great place to live.

Not good
Good side: Convenient location, safe neighborhood
Bad side: No window in the bedroom, not daily garbage pick, no in unit washer/dryer, a little expensive, not effective leasing office

Ideal location
In my opinion, West Village is the best place for couples to live in Durham. The apartments are large and newly updated, and it's in walking distance to all the great bars and restaurants. My partner loves being in an area that isn't full of Fuqua students as she has made many young professional friends here. The management staff isn't the best, but they are improving. I've also had very little interaction with them. The maintenance staff is very quick to respond should there be an issue. The only con is that it is not close to the majority of your classmates and it is further from fuqua (.5 mile). Considering everyone drives to campus, it's not really an issue.

Location is Perfect
Great location, as there are many good restaurants and bars within walking distance. Downtown is also a fairly quick drive to Fuqua. However, the management of the complex is downright awful. We were misled on multiple items. Some examples: we were told we had free parking in the garage in our building (upon arrival we were informed it would be $45 per car per month); we were told that we were moving into a new unit (upon move-in day we found red wine stains on our carpet). In the Moore building (in which we live), the walls are very thin, so if you have a noisy neighbor (or a neighbor with noisy pets), you will easily hear it. Management does not seem to take any sort of questions, concerns or requests the tenants have seriously. There have been multiple instances of crime around the complex, and management's response has been minimal (no new cameras or security guards).

West Village
Excellent location (downtown) with very cool apartments. It is a renovated tobacco warehouse with exposed brick and beams, and large warehouse style windows.

Flowers Building
Pros:
- Great location downtown. Durham's best restaurants and bars are walkable.
- Apartment was spacious with nice features. Has an industrial vibe.
- Relatively inexpensive (compared to some other complexes)
- Can catch the Bull City Connector bus to go to school
- I recommend the Flowers building which has large windows letting in light (as compared to Hicks or Toms). I also think Flowers gets fewer students.
Cons (some depending on your perspective):
- Not as many Fuqua students
- The Connor Group took over management in 2016 and tried to price gauge everyone (e.g. opening offer for lease renewal of $700 inc per month).
- Walls for bedrooms don't go all the way up, so not a great spot for roommates. You can have a convo between bedrooms.

Tobacco warehouse
Amazing Tobacco warehouse converted into loft apartment. Walkable to everything. 12 minute bike ride to Fuqua. High ceilings, exposed brick.

Great Location, Great Character
West Village has an awesome feel to the buildings- with high ceilings and exposed brick, it is very homey. It's also a great location as you're right downtown. Mgmt is fine, amenities are fine, it doesn't have a great community feel with the neighbors; but as b-school students we didn't care about that as much bc we have the Fuqua community.
