Overall rating 6.5/10, based on 55 renter reviews Write a review
West Village reviews and highlights
- huge gym compared to most apartment gyms
- easy access to parking garages
- perfectly located in downtown Durham
- high ceilings, modern kitchens with granite countertops, wood floors, and exposed brick walls and balconies
Issues
Very thin walls, you literally can hear your neighbors. Also, as soon as you turn any water source l, you will smell the bad sewer smell. Very overrated apartment complex with unreasonable rent.

Roomy, Industrial Lofts Central to Downtown
West Village is one of the most central apartment complexes in Durham. Located in the old tobacco factories, most apartments have tall ceilings, large windows, and brick walls. This is a great place to live if you want to be walking distance to restaurants, and it's only an 8 minute walk to Duke East Campus. It takes me 15 minutes to cycle from West Village to central Duke Campus.
This last semester (Fall 2020), West Village was full of undergrads as Duke was not housing at full capacity due to COVID. West Village tends to have thin walls, so sometimes the apartment can be loud.

West Village
Very cool apartment and design. We haven't been able to experience all of the amenities because of COVID but we're excited to hopefully do so next year.

Avoid at all costs
Do not live here, and if you do, do not live in a Phase 1 ground floor apartment. I chose West Village because I had many friends during Duke undergrad (2011-2015) who lived here, and the exposed brick walls and high ceilings are beautiful. Unfortunately, the apartment construction and building's management are terrible - the floors are thin, the charges are high, and the office staff are unhelpful. I was unable to tour in person due to COVID, and the salesperson who Facetimed me into the unit neglected to mention that my unit does not have an in-unit washer/dryer or microwave (my apartment is in Phase 1). The floors are so thin that I can literally hear the words the people living above me say to one another, and their dogs disrupt my sleep nightly and my ability to work remotely during the day. I asked for lots of natural light in my unit, and I don't even have that. West Village charges $60/month more for the same cable and Internet package Trash pick up is more expensive than at other complexes for pick up 3x/week at 9am (exclusive of recycling). Parking is outdoor and can be in high demand. Not worth the $100-$200 you save to live here compared to around Ninth Street.

Not ideal for student life
The "benefits" are just problems. Trash pickup means the halls have trash smell constantly. Secure door mean you have to let every visitor into the building. Downtown location means no parking. Package room means you don't always get notified when a package comes.
Staff is sneaky and will try to get you trapped into bad situation. Stay away.

Expensive, but huge gorgeous warehouse apartments in a great location
I ended up renewing my lease for a 2nd year, because everything else we looked at in Durham seemed tiny compared to what we have now. The prices are a little crazy, but I love being able to walk to most bars in Durham. Plus my high ceilings and exposed brick are beautiful. Probably won't stay another year because of the price, but I've loved being downtown. Disclaimer: Do NOT live here with a roommate (couples or single people only) because the walls do not reach the ceiling, so there would be no privacy.

Central, Pricey, Industrial
West Village is centrally located between the 9th Street District and Downtown. It's also an 8 minute drive and ~18 minute bike ride to Duke West Campus. Most of the residents are young professionals and young families. It tends to be pretty quiet, though the walls can also be thin, so you'll want to ask about the neighbors when selecting your individual unit.
The units themselves all vary; no two units are the same. I would ask to see multiple units, as some have a ton of natural light, while others have barely any. They all tend to be industrial feeling with wooden floors and brick throughout (though there is a new development with a more modern apartment vibe). You should be aware that you can bargain to have parking and other fees included with your rent. You should also be aware that use of the laundry machines comes with an additional cost.
One more note, the room dividers do not all reach to the ceiling, which is to say that if you plan on having roommates, you should be aware of this inconvenience.

West Village Downtown
The apartment complex is very nice. 2 swimming pools, gym, dog parks, library and business center is something is very nice and for the rent I am paying is very considerable.
The properties are nice and there is regular maintenance carried on by the property management group. Located a block away from Brightleaf square, the location is great with multiple buses coming to and from Duke Campus. Duke Vans also have accessibility during after hours.
