Do not rent from West Village.

I would never recommend West Village to anyone. My partner and I have had ongoing problems since we moved in. Our apartment was not even inspected prior to our move-in, and the Property Manager did essentially nothing to rectify that. Among other things, there was mold in places, kitchen was FILTHY and had burned countertops, and some areas of the hardwood floors are so damaged that I've had to buy rugs to cover them up. After moving in to the apartment in this state, we discovered that the maintenance system is a joke - everything I've reported to the online portal has simply been ignored. Every single request. The only ways we have gotten maintenance work completed are 1) contacting the office over and over until they eventually send someone, or 2) by catching the head of maintenance in the hallway (he will ask how we're doing, and then be shocked to hear that we have pending requests, but I actually get the sense it's not his fault). If you think the prices sound good, then keep in mind they tack on $200+ in added monthly fees for their various "amenities" that you may or may not get. The valet trash service we pay $55/month for did not take our trash for the first 5 weeks, and the office did not help resolve the issue at all or offer a refund. We pay monthly for pest control, but our unit has never been treated, despite us reporting cockroaches our very first night.

Outside of our actual apartment, there are still many issues - MULTIPLE times per month, my keycard will just not work at one of our building entrances or garage entrances. The parking garage elevator breaks frequently (incredibly inconvenient for things like carrying groceries). In general, the office rarely communicates with their residents about repairs/problems that affect them. The only way we find out that the elevator is broken, the garage gate is broken, etc is by walking up and trying to use it ourselves.

Finally, I was initially reassured that we'd be living in a locked, gated-in building and keeping our cars in a locked parking garage, especially with the proximity to downtown. However, either management or other residents prop gates AND building doors open for hours, sometimes DAYS at a time. If a non-resident wanted to follow anyone right up to their door or car, they'd have an easy time doing it. This also brings a lot of bugs into the building and drives up utility costs.

The "loft style" is cute and tempting, but it's not worth it. I have lived in many apartments and never had an experience like this.

Great, affordable spot downtown!

The apartment has been great and has a ton of amenities. It is also walking distance to many of the bars and venues downtown that Fuqua has its events at. The apartment unit itself is spacious and affordable. The gym is HUGE and better than most gyms in Durham. Lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Good value but walls do not reach the ceiling

Review title says it all. I live in a 3br in West Village and my walls do not reach the ceiling. The walls are 8 feet and the ceiling is 14 feet. This means theres is very little privacy between rooms. We don’t really even notice anymore, but I would not recommend for introverts or people who frequently have guests over.

If you love factory apartments, West Village is great

It has a lot of character which makes the downsides pretty much worth it.

Great Place to Live, Easy Access to Downtown and Duke

Overall, this place has been great for me. I have a great view from my balcony of downtown and the pool. I have had relatively few issues with the apartment, and maintenance is pretty timely whenever things need to be fixed. The front office is wonderful and normally handles requests on the same day. My neighbors are nice and friendly. This place is also pet and kid-friendly. There are different generations and family configurations that live here. It is safe and I have lived her for my entire graduate experience.

Management Issues

The building is undergoing renovations and as a result we have had many maintenance issues and maintenance has been slow to respond to them.

West Village Warehouse Apartments

I just moved into West Village, but I'm enjoying living here so far. I'm living in one of the units in an old warehouse building, so the building is very unique and has its own style. West Village is located downtown and less than 10 minutes drive to Duke's campus and the hospital. The location is perfect, because you can easily walk to restaurants and other businesses nearby.

Getting around Brightleaf

Brightleaf Reviews

Very safe neighborhood, I have never felt unsafe here and have been comfortably walking alone even at night. Streets have good lighting. Very close to bars and restaurants.
Brightleaf is essentially the (very small) area between downtown and Duke's East Campus. It's fairly walkable, has a few good restaraunts, and is about as central in Durham as one can get. It's not the most scenic neighborhood, but if you want to run or walk, you're very close the ATT, or the leafier neighborhoods of Trinity Park.
Love the neighbourhood, very lively filled with the newest restaurants and bars
Really love the brightleaf area. Lots of restaurants and bars. New spots popping up! Very close to downtown.
Love it - Durham is growing very fast and it's nice to be close to it!
Brightleaf tends to be pretty quiet; It is almost entirely made up of West Village. It's walkable to good dining options and is central to Durham as a whole. Not a lot of "neighborliness" however. Most people seem to be working professionals with a few young families.
Fantastic neighborhood - fun to live down town. Very walkable to all bars and restaurants. Close enough to Ninth Street.
Downtown is a very social place with a lot of bars and restaurants. A lot of graduate students live in this complex and the complex is very secure with access cards requirement in every building.
