Great complex
I absolutely love living here. The management team is great and the community is really fun. The staff put on events every week, like happy hour every Friday, HIIT workout classes every Tuesday, movie night every Monday, as well as having food trucks come every Friday night.

Van Alen Living
It has been such a pleasure to be living at Van Alen. The entire staff has been welcoming, and I really feel at home. The community amenities are great. I love the gym, clubhouse and pool area. My apartment unit was just the right fit for me. My friends love coming to visit, which is great because Van Alen is a lovely venue to host small gatherings. The location is very convenient! I don't have a car, but I can walk to just about all the favorite hangout spots in downtown Durham. It's even a great, refreshing walk to school and the 9th street area.

Van Alen
It’s a clean and safe apartment complex. Noise is not an issue. The elevators have been down infrequently but overall it’s a good place to live. They allow two pets but there are not many places to take a dog out.
Very close to downtown but not in the middle. Close enough to walk to everything but it’s real quiet in the area surrounding the complex.

Van Alen Review
Great apartment with good amenities and nearby downtown Durham.

Best apartments in Durham for the price (but everyone is in 9th Str)
Great experience, they fix issues the same day you report them, they give away free food almost every other day, they have happy hours, waffle & mimosa sundays and many more events, people are friendly and you'll find the cutest pets. However, a lot is going on on 9th street and you'll miss out. I came with my wife and calm is something we were looking for but some people may want to live with more Fuquans. This year there were 7-8 fuquans here only.

Great Amenities, High Price
Van Alen is a new "luxury" apartment community that has a plethora of amenities and a relatively convenient location downtown.

Quaint but not without issues
The apartment is fine. It's cute and clean, and priced affordably. The location is great; it is next to a nature trail and about a mile away from Geer Street and the Duke East campus. The landlord is responsive and laid back. It is relatively spacious, although lacking closet space. However, there are some significant issues with insulation and humidity that make the apartment borderline uninhabitable in the winter. It is also next to a creek, meaning that the yard is often very wet (and I suspect where much of the inside humidity comes from).
