The Best Place in Durham
Van Alen is the nicest place to live in Durham. It has more amenities than a busy law student could use. The gym is perfect with free weights, treadmills, machines, and peloton bikes. The apartment has a sauna and steam room.
The management is very nice and fixes any issues immediately. The apartment complex is quiet. Van Alen does not rent to any undergrads. The apartment population is mostly young professionals/grad students. 20% of the population is people over 35. However, there are no young kids running around screaming.
It comes with two floors of garage parking. The garage is closed off. Someone cannot walk in off the street and get to the garage. I would not live anywhere in Durham that does not have a closed off garage.
Van Alen is directly across the street from the Durham Courthouse and the Durham Bulls stadium. You can watch Durham Bulls games from the beautiful rooftop patio. The rooftop patio provides great views of North Carolina sunsets.
I have not had any problems living at Van Alen. Although rent prices may seem high per month, Van Alen offers 9 month leases. If you don't plan to spend the summer in Durham then Van Alen is just as affordable as other apartments in the area.

Live at Van Alen
Van Alen is beautiful. The property and the apartments are well kept. The staff and concierge are amazing. The only downside is the guest parking. There are very limited guest parking spots.

Van Alen
It's super safe and feels very secure; the management team is really communicative and responsive to problems; they want to build a sense of community and put on a TON of events; the folks at the front desk are REALLY friendly; the pool is gorgeous and everything is clean; I haven't experienced neighbors making a lot of noise late at night...the apartments are gorgeous.

Van Alen
The complex is very nice, the units are modern, the pool and gym and nice, and downtown Durham is a cool location. It is faiurly quiet, can sometimes here the people above and below me but not too much of an issue. I can also just hear cars go by often as its right next to the highway. I love the free coffee machine in the lobby. Living in Downtown Durham is cool, and the drive is pretty manageable, about 7-10 minutes. I will say that as a 1L, I don't get to experience all downtown Durham has to offer as much as I would have hoped. I may have chosen to live closer to the law school if I realized that.

Van Alen Apartments Review

Great amenities and location
The apartment complex is by far, better than many others I have seen for the same price. The amenities are incredible, for me that was really important as I intended to use the gym, grills, etc. The only weak point is that it is far from campus and you need to walk to the bus station if you want to move around. However, the area is very safe and you can walk even at night.

Amazing Apartments
We have been blown away by Van Alen in almost every way. We feel that it has significantly better amenities and is just nicer than similarly priced Ninth Street properties. We also found that the management team was much easier to work with than those on Ninth Street, and that is what led us to choose Van Alen when we had originally planned to live on Ninth Street.
The complex is also very pet friendly and has neither breed nor puppy restrictions.
