Idaho Terrace Review

I've had a great experience at Idaho Terrace so far. My studio has just enough space for me (even with my winter clothes and many plants). I feel very safe in this area, which is important for me since I live alone. It is close to school and some bus stops, but I do wish it was closer to the metro. Management is very responsive and very friendly. I do wish it had a dishwasher and in unit laundry. It is humid, being an older building, but once I got a mini dehumidifier it has been very comfortable. It is a very quiet building, I don't see or hear others very often, which on one hand is great because there is not a lot of noise, but socially I haven't met many people which I'm a little disappointed about.

Living at Idaho Terrace is convenient for me. The location is close to campus, the grocery store, and overall it is a safe neighborhood.

Finding This Apartment Was a Relief

After months of researching apartments, Idaho Terrace appeared on Apartments.com with a great location (15-20 min. walk to AU and right next to N2 and N4 metro stops) at a reasonable price. It is a relatively quiet neighborhood with lots of green spaces/deer and squirrels. It is also a short walk from Giant, CVS, Walgreens, Starbucks, and a bunch of other restaurants and shops, including a weekend farmers market at the end of the block. My unit was sparkling clean upon move-in and the staff has always been polite and attentive. It is an older building, so it's not glitzy--more cozy than fancy. The staff is only here M-F 9-5. The closest metro station is a mile away in Tenleytown-AU (red line). My unit has a proper kitchen space with counters and lots of cabinetry, and I have a walk-in closet, even in a 473 sq. ft. studio.

Great place for graduate students

This is a good place, decent layout, functioning facilities, helpful staff. The only negative is the distance to a metro stop.

All you need without the Frills

This complex is very nice. Residents are mostly all students and older folks. Undergraduate neighbors can be loud and disruptive sometimes. Occasionally smell smoke or marijuana. Management is nice and responsive, as is maintenance. Building is well-maintained though the apartments are quite old and showing their age. On a central heating system so gets hot in winter and cold in summer. Not many amenities to speak of, other than a package locker, a laundry room, and a very basic fitness center. Overall, for the price paid, apartment is fine, and a great place if you want to live on the N2 bus line/15 minute walk to campus. However, if you want to get more bang for your buck and don't mind a longer commute, you could find many more amenities for the same price in a different area of DC or outside the city limits. Also about a 25 minute walk to closest Metrorail so bus dependent.

Safe Comfortable and Quiet

Idaho Terrace is a safe, comfortable and quiet community. The location is convenient for those working/studying at AU or in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood, and on major bus lines. However, not very convenient for those who may need to commute given its distance from metro stops (commute times can be over an hour to get to the other side of the city).Walking distance to Giant, CVS and Starbucks, as well as several restaurants in Downtown Cathedral heights. The building has an odd age skew with most residents being either AU students or retired folks.

Decent space for single tenant

Management takes pest control and cleaning very seriously, so the maintenance team is very useful, friendly, and attentive to requests. We’ve had frequent hot water replacements however, so expect half days without hot water. The building is old but remodeled since 1949, so you’ll feel comfortable with a simple room layout if that’s your preference.

I live within walking distance of the university, and half a mile from a grocery store. There is a bus stop right outside the building. The neighborhood is safe and quiet.
An easy walk to school, and an amazing view of the national cathedral. Grocery shopping and restaurants are just a couple blocks away. The 33 bus line is very accessible and consistent. The only problem is that it is a 20+ minute walk to the closest metro stops (Cleveland park and Tenleytown metro stops).
A nice neighborhood with a Giant grocery store, CVS, salon, several restaurants, a Starbucks and bus transit. A nice area, though quite expensive for DC, which you will notice in the clientele that pass through and in the rent prices. Great proximity to the university and bus access to Tenleytown, Glover Park, Friendship Heights, campus, Georgetown and Farragut Square. Other parts of DC are more difficult to get to. Very safe area, though you will occasionally be begged for money or bothered riding buses (though this is the case all over DC MD and VA frankly).
Mclean Gardens is a great little spot, a few restaurants, close to grocery stores, and very walkable!
I went into this a bit on my apartment review. I love living in an actual neighborhood. There's always kids and dogs running around so it feel super safe. I like the front yards, trees, and gardens - definitely doesn't give off the "concrete jungle" vibe. There's not a lot of traffic noise and everything is pretty well maintained. There's some gorgeous Embassies near by which are stunning to look at. Great area for jogging (if you're into that) and right by American without feeling like you live in a dorm.
It seems like if you live or work at AU, this is a great neighborhood for you. Also if you work on the N2/N4/N6 route and want to be sort of tucked-back into the semi-suburbs but won't be bothered by college kids, it's also a great neighborhood for that. Mass Ave South of campus is basically all apartments for a few blocks so that really is the neighborhood. Not that it's not a great neighborhood if you're not involved with AU, but since I went there, most of the people I know around here are affiliated with the school.
Relatively peaceful, quiet, and green neighborhood that’s not too far away from the bustling and louder college residences or town markets. Very walkable, close to the wooden trail, and easy access to transit.
It’s been pretty safe - I think living next to Homeland Security and within AU’s campus helps keep me aware of any potential threats or safety concerns in ways that I wouldn’t if I didn’t live here.
