Avoid Due to Pest Issue in the Building

The building has a major pest issue. Besides mice and roaches, we recently started having bedbugs in the building. On top of the rat infested abandoned cars in the garage, the homeless people hanging out in the stairwell and in the hallways, the constant smell of weed filling the hallways and coming into the units, this is not a building I could recommend. It is a shame, because a few years ago I could not say anything bad about the building.

4000 Mass

Expensive but it's a great apartment building. You get a lot of space, there's a deli run by a nice Korean family, and a seamstress/dry cleaner, and a barbershop. There is no gym and there is a communal laundry room. which are downsides.

Good value in safe neighborhood

Might be a bit far for some, but there are two nearby bus lines heading downtown, and shops/restaurants nearby on Wisconsin Ave. For the outdoorsy type, the Glover Archibold trail is adjacent to the building, and for the cyclist it's an 8 minute ride out of DC on MacArthur Ave into MD.

Great neighborhood - Quiet but close to city

4000 Mass is a great location for wanting to live in a quieter neighborhood, but also being close to the city. Close to American University for students. Parking is expensive if you choose to park in the garage, but plenty of street parking.

4000 Mass Ave is a great place to live

The floor plans are spacious. The property is secure and the community is welcoming (families, young professionals, some elderly, international mix). The leasing office is very accessible and usually responsive.
This is a full service apt bldg which hosts a breakfast cafe/lunch counter, small 7/11 type market, full service dry cleaner w/ wash-n-fold options, front dest clerk/package valet/bellhop. Bike rooms, extra storage and luggage storage are all available and included with the lease. Parking is an add on. So if you don't need it, you don't pay for it (they have 7 garages and outside parking).
I will say, noise travels easily and rugs are mandatory but bare feet or shoes on hardwood is what it is. There are 3 or 4 bus stops just outside, so the commute is quite convenient to all of DC. The new Giant on Macomb is near many restaurants, banking and boutiques; they are walkable. There's a farmers market at the corner during the warmer months--so fresh local produce is a nice bonus. Most people walk Nebraska Ave. to get to Tenleytown. There's no gym…but honestly--you'll be outside enjoying the grounds and the neighborhood/or you can just have your own equipment 'cuz you'll have the space. The National Cathedral is just our the window and also walkable!!
The bad thing about this place: only one set of elevators--so if you live at the end--you have to walk--but the leasing office is cognizant of this and they were able to give me us a parking spot next to the stairwell nearest our unit. Also there are several secure entrances, therefore the elevators aren't mandatory.
Overall--great place to live.

Sometimes, if the bus is unreliable, I end up walking home at night. I have never felt unsafe because Massachusetts avenue is always populated with other students and cars (don't push it if it's after 10 p.m., though, anywhere in the world as a young woman). There are many older people who smile and greet me when I walk outside. There are also tons of what I call the "Lulu lemon moms" in their athleisure running uphill with the stroller. Compared to other parts of DC, it is quiet and full of nature. If you walk two blocks east, you reach Wisconsin Avenue and it becomes busy and loud. If you walk a long block west, you reach campus, and it's also hectic. But this neighborhood is nestled in between and almost feels like a suburb.
Overall it's a nice and quiet area. In addition, it's quite safe with serious crimes being few and far between. However, it's somewhat far from the nearest metro station (Tenleytown-AU). Also, there are not many restaurants/bars nearby, so going out generally involves public transit, rideshare, etc.
Quiet area with lots to do. It's a good mix of college students, young professionals, and families. Pretty safe. The only downside is, while it has bus stops, there's no access to the metro. So if you live in this area you would need a car or be willing to have a fairly difficult commute depending on where you're going.
The neighborhood here is beautiful with lots of trees, places to walk, and access to the Georgetown waterfront. There are a lot of families that live here and elderly people so it's a little farther from some of the night life in D.C. but if you are willing to split a ride with friends or hop on the bus it is very doable.

A note: although the neighborhood is pet friendly, the building does not allow pets.

Overall, it's beautiful here and a nice escape from the craziness of law school life.
Relatively peaceful, quiet, and green neighborhood that’s not too far away from the bustling and louder college residences or town markets. Very walkable, close to the wooden trail, and easy access to transit.
Close to campus, Wegman's & Giant Food nearby, nice neighborhood.
Not all that walkable, restaurants are a little far
It's very quiet. If you're looking for more of a night life and action this probably isn't the neighborhood for you
