Overall pleasant experience with some dreadful periods

Belmont is overall a nice place to live with peaceful nature within the community. The clubhouse has just been renovated so everything is quite new and updated. The gym and study rooms are good.
I would say it gets harder if your apartment is in the back of the community because you would have to walk quite a distance to the bus stop. Check the map before you decide. But there's also back gate that you can walk to a small restaurant area including Chipotle and Dunkin Donuts.
Belmont is mainly different from other apartments in the vicinity in that it's structured like an actual home where you have your own entrance as opposed to hotel/condominium-like style where you enter the main entrance that leads to rooms down the hallway. So the latter might be a little bit safer in a way.
There were some scary incidents regarding armed robberies in the community; four happened within a 2-week span which was quite unacceptable. Me and my roommate were so freaked out and paranoid we could not sleep and kept having nightmares for quite some time. It stressed us out to live under this condition.
The management tried to fix this, of course, coordinating with the police, hiring more security, but still, this was a very frustrating time. So you might want to keep that in mind.
Last thing I would like to mention was the pest problem. I lived on the first floor and experienced cockroaches problem for a few weeks. I could confidently say that my apartment was super clean so I was confused when this happened. I wish the maintenance could have responded sooner to our request but when they came, the cockroaches actually stopped showing up. So pest control worked.

Not so great

Belmont has decent apartments and facilities. Although this year we had concerns with respect to safety. In the month of November, there were 4-5 robberies in the apartments and the response from the authorities was highly unacceptable and inadequate.

Belmont is not recommended for international students

Due to all the accidents happened recently, I find that Belmont apartments lack sufficient security measures to help protect the safety of its residents. Management is not responsive. And the police is really ineffective. Although there are security guards working at Belmont right now, I don't know whether this kind of service is going to last or not. If Belmont stops offering this service, this place could again turn to be a target of the criminals.

Good but unsafe

There were 5 armed robberies in a week at the Belmont. It’s very unsafe. But undoubtedly it has the most beautiful property amongst all. It’s up to you to choose. Hopefully it can become safer till you guys come.

Good environment, but safety is a concern

Overall good living environment. The community is quiet with a lot of international students living here. However, several armed robberies have taken place in the community due to the opening front and back gate and no security cameras. The doors for each apartment are relatively old and it is not impossible for someone to kick it open (that's how some break-in happened). If you are looking for an apartment for more security, don't choose Belmont.

Please do not recommend this place to anyone

My experience at the Belmont has nothing but disappointing. Be prepared to deal with roaches, silverfishes and other pests + no elevators + no garbage disposal services + HIGHLY UNSAFE COMMUNITY with a LOT OF ROBBERIES AND THEFTS + old fashioned apartments. Absolutely horrifying!! I do not recommend anyone to live here!

Belmont apartments

Belmont is a good property with good value for money. The clubhouse, pool and lakeside make it an attractive property.
The concern though is that of safety. In November 2018, we had around 5 robberies in our apartment and it took a lot of effort to get the authorities moving.

Great location, value, service

I've had a very positive experience at the Belmont. It's very convenient to class (10 minute bike ride, 20 minute walk, or bus). The gate isn't always closed, but there is added security that allows me to feel safe walking around. Maintenance requests are completed timely. Office can usually answer my questions. Pool and fitness room are great. Walking distance from chipotle for easy dinner. Apartments are smaller and older than Station 9/Berkshire 9, but definitely worth it for the lower rent.

Good to stay but overpriced

Belmont is close to west campus with bus stops nearby. It is convenient for new students who are not familiar with the area. The community is well-equipped, with plenty of parking places, open area, and gym. The 2b2b apartment can be comfortably shared by two, but it is over-priced a bit and the price is rising every season.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
