Capitol
The Heart of Madison
Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin, is located at 2 East Main Street, where State Street meets Capitol Square. Capitol is said to be one of the best destinations for shopping, dining, and entertainment for locals and tourists.
Here, the area is alive with events like music festivals, concerts, races, dances, and jazz festivals. The Dane County Capitol Square South Ramp allows 1,000 vehicles in its garage, which many people find helpful. It allows for easy access to the downtown farmers’ market, summer concerts, the Wisconsin State Capitol building, Art Fairs, and about 80 area restaurants.

Capitol —
8.9/10 Rating
(based on 122 neighborhood reviews)
I feel VERY safe on the east side of the Capitol. My apartment is only a couple blocks from city hall and the justice department so there is a comforting level of police presence. There is so much to do within walking distance including restaurants and bars, Lake Monona, and lots of free events around the Capitol and Capitol square like the weekly farmer’s market and concerts on the square.

I am pretty close to all of my schoolmates that live near city hall. My friends live near James Madison Park on the other side and it takes me about 15ish minutes to walk to them. I am down the street from a bunch of bars and food. What I like the most is I am away from the rowdy undergrads but can put myself in that situation anytime I want, it's nice and quiet but I can go to the loud easily if I want it.

Adjacent to the restaurants, bars, and entertainment of downtown, and accessible to nearly every bus line and many bike share stations. Generally a quiet neighborhood further away from campus. A short walk to Willy Street and one block from Lake Monona!

This part of the Capitol neighborhood is very safe and picturesque. The street is lined with trees and beautiful apartments. It is located close to Lake Monona and the paved bike trail which takes you around the lake and to school. It is slightly more quiet than the State Street location, but not a far walk if you want to go out to the bars. Many MBAs and working professionals live in this area.

10 minute walk to the Business School. Small grocery store 1 block away. There can be noise on weekends or game days, but we don't mind -- usually only hear it if windows are open. Walkable to bars and restaurants near the capitol square, as well as State St and campus. Close to bike path and easy jog to either Lake Monona or Lake Mendota. We love it!

Great location--bus route runs right by the building straight to Grainger, a ~5 minute bus ride which is a nice option for the winter months. Otherwise walking to Grainger takes 10-12 minutes, not too long at all.

Great neighborhood - close to school (only about a 10 minute walk from my apartment) and easy to get to lots of fun bars and restaurants. Parking can be a little tough, though. Most people have to pay for parking at their apartments, which isn't cheap. Ours is $175/month!

Great location! In a residential area, so you don’t have to listen to people yelling and waking from bar to bar like you would if you lived closer to downtown. Being so close to everything - restaurants, bars, the overture, the comedy clubs, the capital square - there is always something going on. Despite that, you can't Hear the neighborhood from your apartment- the walls are thick. The best of both worlds!
Also, I feel super safe here in this building. The fire department is connected to our building- but you barely hear them (even being right over them). They usually - at least at night- try to start their sirens once they go down the street. Keep reading

I've always felt comfortable in this neighborhood, and there is also enough activity to feel social. Best neighborhood out there. I lived right off state street near Short Stack Eatery. State street can be a little noisy at times with a lot of cop and fire services vehicle running around with loud sirens. There is a tad bit of crime and homeless people on state street but it receives a lot of attention from cops and state street is usually always crowded so I was never quite concerned. Walking around the Capitol at night, which is 3 mins from my home, with an ice-cream from Kilwins is defintely worth any minor issues living downtown! There are a ton of food options and as someone who never cooked I absolutely loved staying off state street or around the Capitol. Bus connectivity is awesome and I never felt the need for a car. Great option for bachelors looking for some nightlife and great restaurants just a walk away. Free parking is usually tough to find.
