Decent and Convenient Apartment

I like the apartment, the rent is affordable but the neighborhood isn't great - not that many students. The management company is highly responsive.

Working class vibe but overall a decent place

Not the most visually appealing place but rent is fairly cheap.

If you apply to rent a room with a roommate, the leasing office does the matchmaking for you. In my experience, I expressed my preferences as much as possible. I personally think I'm lucky I got the roommate I have.
Depending on where your apartment building is, there may be loud ambient noise. This is true for buildings facing 54 where cars normally speed.

Most people are nice and friendly although you will sometimes see slightly more interesting characters.

Solid spot in Carrboro

Great spot if you don't mind bussing or driving to campus - being a little out of the way is nice, I think. Walk to Franklin is around 30 minutes. Super responsive and friendly management, nice layout and lots of light for plants in the apartment.

Collins Crossing

The quality is plastic, like other apartments in Durham, Chapel Hill area. Pictures are not accurate, like other complex. But it is close to Carrboro by foot, and no problem if you don't have a car. The bus stop is outside. Bus 405 to Durham runs from here and also J bus to Chapel Hill. For the price is ok

Do NOT recommend

The property has been renovated to be cosmetically acceptable, but the actual resident experience does not match appearances.

When my roommate and I moved in, our entire unit smelled like cigarette smoke (despite being a non-smoking property).
We raised the issue with the leasing office immediately and it took over a month to address and only after threatening to not pay full rent.
The unit has also been plagues with bugs; been treated 2-3 times and still have noticeable bug presence.

Another KFBS classmate had her first floor unit flood when the area experienced heavy rain.

While inexpensive, not a convenient location for socializing on Franklin St or in Carrboro (despite being located in Carrboro, long and questionable walk to get to downtown, especially at night)

Great Location, but rent is always increasing!

We have lived here since June of 2013. Collins Crossing is a nice apartment complex. However, Aspen Management does not own all of the units on the property leaving some shady people living here. Some of the people that hang out and live in this complex are not good people. I have never felt threatened here, but the cops do come here at least once a week for some kind drug, alcohol, or domestic violence disputes. Collins Crossing does cater to students. There is a nice pool, membership to O2 fitness, and plenty of free parking here. Due to the student population there are nights when I have had issues with neighbors being loud or doing stupid things in the parking lot (i.e. shooting soft air guns, playing football around the cars, shooting off fireworks). I call the cops and they take care of any issues I have pretty quickly. The apartments are nice, but nothing fancy. Vinyl and carpet floors, formica counters, and fresh paint are what you'll move in to. The maintenance guys here are pretty good. They are usually pretty quick to get things done when I have had an issue. These apartments were fully renovated in 2013 and the issues I have had have been nothing major. The office workers and manager change frequently, which is annoying. The rent also increases around $100/yr with every year promising to cap out. We started at $735 in June 2013, and are now at $1016. Rent in this area is pretty expensive but it is annoying how much it goes up every year. I like properties that give loyal renters a break, this is not one of them. This property knows students will move in and out in a couple of years so they keep jacking up the rent for everyone. This is a great community for pets. They allow dogs and cats. There are washers and dryers in each unit. The J bus goes from here to campus making commuting easy to downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill.
