For young people

I've been living in this apartment building for almost two years now. I work right across the street so it's pretty convenient for me to comminute in the mornings. The inside of the apartment needs a little bit more work. I wouldn't have chosen to stay here if it wasn't for my job.

Nothing special...

Avalon is really average on everything but the price. I moved here for work purposes, but I might move soon because it's not worth the price. If you prefer to live in a quiet area, Avalon might not be your best bet. The amenities are okay, but the gym could be better.

Average apartment

Avalon is alright for students who want to have a walking distance to American University. A lot of AU students live here, and they are pretty friendly. I've been living here since my freshman year and I think It's pretty convenient. There are some nearby restaurants and supermarkets. Metro is about 1 mile.

Good choice for students

The Avalon is located in a pretty nice area. There are a lot of trees kind of separates the building from noisy street. Compare to other apartments in the area, Avalon is a little bit over priced, but it's also very close to the campus, it's less than 10 minutes walk. I personally enjoy staying here.

Not worth the price

I've been living in Avalon for ...ever. Mostly because I couldn't leave the school area. For the amount of money that I pay each month, I would say Avalon definitely isn't worth the price tag. Our gym is pretty old, and often smelly during the summer. The pool on rooftop is tiny, and a lot of students bring friends over so it's always crowded. The management team is not very responsible for problem reported. You just really have to be patient with them.

The Issue with a Pseudo Oligopoly

School adjacent apartments justify price with location but forget all other aspects that involve good living. I wouldn't recommend but the front desk staff are the best aspect of this place. BTW: they won't reimburse for major water leaks: renter ins

Love the Avalon

Social and fun the Avalon is a great place to live. The front desk staff is always friendly and the coffee fresh. With its close proximity to American, Georgetown and many other favorite D.C. amenities it is a great value for its cost. Ideal for young people and students.

Poor Location but Not Bad

The Avalon at Foxhall has all of the hallmarks of a quality luxury building: well appointed apartments, washer/dryer in-unit, rooftop pool, gym on-site and underground parking. Its location, however, is troublesome. For those commuting downtown, the only real option is the city bus that picks up outside the building. Unless you are working in Dupont or near Farragut Square, this means a connection to the Metro's Red Line. A commute to Gallery Place can often take well over an hour on most days. The other major issue with this building is the abundance of American University students. While most students are respectful and well-behaved, building management does little to rein in those who are not. Much of the time it feels like living in a fraternity house instead of a luxury apartment building. When my lease expires, I will be moving to a property away from universities and near the Metro.

Decent living

The Avalon at Foxhall is a good apartment for students, but management does not take students seriously. For this price, there should be granite countertops and dependable hot water. Neither are the case. The rooftop pool is excellent in the summer, and is probably the most worthwhile part of the building. The gym is decent but poorly air conditioned.

Great building

Great building, a bit out of the way unfortunately. You aren't living in the city for "going out" or by the nicest restaurants, but you are paying for what you get. The building is nice, amenities great, and the neighborhood is safe and quite residential.

Cathedral Heights Reviews

I live within walking distance of the university, and half a mile from a grocery store. There is a bus stop right outside the building. The neighborhood is safe and quiet.
An easy walk to school, and an amazing view of the national cathedral. Grocery shopping and restaurants are just a couple blocks away. The 33 bus line is very accessible and consistent. The only problem is that it is a 20+ minute walk to the closest metro stops (Cleveland park and Tenleytown metro stops).
A nice neighborhood with a Giant grocery store, CVS, salon, several restaurants, a Starbucks and bus transit. A nice area, though quite expensive for DC, which you will notice in the clientele that pass through and in the rent prices. Great proximity to the university and bus access to Tenleytown, Glover Park, Friendship Heights, campus, Georgetown and Farragut Square. Other parts of DC are more difficult to get to. Very safe area, though you will occasionally be begged for money or bothered riding buses (though this is the case all over DC MD and VA frankly).
Mclean Gardens is a great little spot, a few restaurants, close to grocery stores, and very walkable!
I went into this a bit on my apartment review. I love living in an actual neighborhood. There's always kids and dogs running around so it feel super safe. I like the front yards, trees, and gardens - definitely doesn't give off the "concrete jungle" vibe. There's not a lot of traffic noise and everything is pretty well maintained. There's some gorgeous Embassies near by which are stunning to look at. Great area for jogging (if you're into that) and right by American without feeling like you live in a dorm.
It seems like if you live or work at AU, this is a great neighborhood for you. Also if you work on the N2/N4/N6 route and want to be sort of tucked-back into the semi-suburbs but won't be bothered by college kids, it's also a great neighborhood for that. Mass Ave South of campus is basically all apartments for a few blocks so that really is the neighborhood. Not that it's not a great neighborhood if you're not involved with AU, but since I went there, most of the people I know around here are affiliated with the school.
Relatively peaceful, quiet, and green neighborhood that’s not too far away from the bustling and louder college residences or town markets. Very walkable, close to the wooden trail, and easy access to transit.
It’s been pretty safe - I think living next to Homeland Security and within AU’s campus helps keep me aware of any potential threats or safety concerns in ways that I wouldn’t if I didn’t live here.
