Great Location But Some Big Problems

I've lived at the Point for about 5 years, starting with some previous owners. While there have been significant improvements over that time, there are still some major concerns with the building. That said, if your main concern is price and proximity to the metro, you might love it here.

Pros:
- Just a few blocks from the metro
- Cheaper than newer buildings in Silver Spring
- New management got a good hold on the pest problem over the past year
- Updated courtyard is very nice
- 7-11, Deli (w/beer and burgers), hair saloon, and more in the building
- Super pet-friendly and it has two areas for dogs to use that make morning walks good. 90% of the dogs in the complex are very friendly to people and other dogs.

Cons:
- It takes a lot to get management to respond to issues (except maintenance; maintenance team is pretty good)
- It's unclear how safe the building is. We have police in the building a couple times a week and the management office has never told us anything about this (even when asked).
- It's an old building, so if you have neighbors who smoke (anything) then your apartment will get the smell as will the hallway.
- Amenities aren't the best. Gym gets shut down a lot due to issues and the units that you can rent when family comes for the weekend are not acceptable at all (you would never rent them in the condition they're in)
- Communal washers have had a mold problem for about a year and it's bad enough that your clothes may smell
- Elevator problems are a weekly occurrence

Downtown Silver Spring Living

The Point at Silver Spring is a great place to live, located walking distance from the heart of downtown Silver Spring. The property is older, but management has made major updates to all the amenities, and some of the units. We live in an upgraded unit with a washer/dryer in unit, which we love, but there are also washer/dryers on each floor for the units that do not have their own. The neighborhood is great, young, and fairly safe. I love being able to walk to a restaurant, the grocery store, or most anything else I need. The property is also located very close to the Silver Spring Metro (less than a 10 minute walk), which is a huge perk. Management is friendly and responsive, and overall the property is very well maintained.

Great location, not so great cost

The Point at Silver Spring is a mediocre apartment in the heart of Silver Spring. It's newly-renovated and clean, although my unit had a severe bug problem that took MONTHS to resolve. The complex, overall, is great--paying individual utilities sucks.

Getting around Silver Spring

Silver Spring Reviews

66 reviews
Slower pace, smaller and safer than DC, but has all the same offerings. Ethnic restaurants, shopping, nightlife, nature trails, public transit, farmers market. Very diverse, aesthetically pleasing and walkable.
There is a ton to do in downtown Silver Spring. The Veterans plaza area has great restaurants and bars. The farmers market on Saturdays is huge, and my favorite part of the weekend. Lots of young couples, and families.
I lived in silver spring since undergrad and have no complaints. Front desk does good job of not letting random people into building. You need key fob to access most areas of building so feels very safe
There is a lot of green space, and the walk to the Metro station is really nice. It's quiet, which we really like.
Right in the heart of DTSS so a lot to do and a lot of great restaurants.
It's only a five minute walk to the red line metro stop in downtown Silver Spring (which is only three stops from campus). As someone who does not have a car, it is in an excellent location as everything is within walking distance (although the bigger grocery stores like Giant and WholeFoods are a bit of a farther walk- about a half mile). The apartment is right around the corner from one of Maryland's Federal District Courthouses and a wonderful brewery that offers a lot of fun and safe outdoor dining options due to COVID-19. There is also a farmer's market in downtown Silver Spring's center shopping area every Saturday morning. The noise levels aren't too bad as the apartment is on a side street rather than the main roads in the downtown area.
Pros: Across the street from a park and quiet neighborhood for children to play. The neighborhood is good for a quiet run. 7-11 across the street for quick snack and coffee runs. 5 minutes away from downtown for restaurants, shopping and movies. 5 minutes away from metro station. Grocery stores and mall within 10 minutes.
Cons: Traffic. elevated noise due to multiple high rises amplifying outside noise.
DT Silver Spring is very much a city. It's more diverse that DC neighborhoods tend to be, with people from everywhere, of all income and education levels and of all ages and life-stages. This makes for a pretty eclectic place. There are three grocery stores in walking distance (including a Wholefoods) and the Silver Spring metro and bus station (a hideous looking monstrosity) ensure you can get anywhere pretty easily. The train line can be pretty noisy when the freight trains come through, but you get used to it.
