Great place to grow mushrooms

I'm horrified I fed my kids out of their mushroom and mold infested kitchen for so long!
I lived in Arrive North Bethesda for almost 3 years (Dec 2021-Oct 2024). I really liked it at first; good location for us, nice windows, a spacious layout with 3 bedrooms and a good price for the area. It's an old building though, elevators break, AC breaks, and water shutdowns are pretty common. I've also had mice and roaches, but the most concerning issue is property management's disregard for resident safety.
I had literal mushrooms growing from the wall of my kitchen. Large ugly looking ones from multiple spots. And somehow management either denied or ignored all my work orders and emails regarding the underlying mold and health issues the mushrooms represented. Even a note from my wife's doctor asking them to get the unit inspected was ignored. Instead, they would send a poor maintenance worker to pull mushrooms out of the walls/cabinets, slap caulk on the holes, and in one case just cut a section of drywall out where some mushrooms were growing. You could even see black mold on the section of drywall they cut out and they still denied it when it was right in front of them. Worse, a lab later confirmed there were asbestos fibers in the ceiling that the maintenance worker broke off while removing the kitchen wall piece. Only after I paid for my own mold inspection, filed a complaint with Montgomery County Housing Code Enforcement (https://apps.montgomerycountymd.gov/dhca-eproperty, Code Enforcement Case: 187599), and had my unit inspected by the Maryland Department of Environment-Asbestos Division did they start to take the issue seriously. They nearly hired an unlicensed contractor to do the work until MDE told them they had to take the proper asbestos handling procedures. If I didn't already have enough reason to move out at that point, my 9-year-old son pulled an entire outdoor lamp post down on the property, nearly crushing himself right in front of the maintenance office. When I looked at the fallen lamp post, the bottom was all rusted and deteriorated. I reported two other lamp posts with similar rust and deterioration at the bottom and they did nothing about them Not even so much as putting as putting some caution tape around them.
Needless to say, I've lost all faith in them and I'm rather baffled by the level of negligence and lack of concern or even remorse. When the mold inspector declared our apartment a condition 3 environment and told me to leave immediately. The property squeezed my family of five into temporary housing 2/3 the size for a month (while charging me full rent until I complained) while they fumbled through getting the mold addressed while adhering to proper asbestos handling procedures that I'm surprised they don't already have in place. The day I left they had just taken down the kitchen wall in my unit, but I wouldn't count on it being safe in that apartment, the one across from it that shares the kitchen wall, or whatever apartments(s) above mine where the water leak that caused all this came from.

The space and amenities are a great value. I think this would be a fantastic place for a small family to live. Down sides are that the management is subpar. Their communication with residents leaves much to be desired. The location is up and coming. However at the moment, for a young person, there is not much to do. Give it five years and this will be a great place to live.

The Monterey is Great, Could use Better Management

We have been living at the Monterey for almost 2 years now. Since we have been here, the original management company was bought out by Panco Management Company. Since PMC has taken over, we have seen a decline in the staffing and management at the Monterey apartments. The elevators have been broken several times, which I understand is out of their control, but they didn't seem to be in a hurry to fix them - one time the North Side elevator was out for almost a month. I have heard stories of packages lost, cockroaches in the apartments, but I personally have never experienced these challenges. I will say, we did have a power outage in part of our apartment, and after they failed to fix it successfully a few times, the management team reimbursed us for a portion of our rent. They didn't necessarily have to do that, but it was a nice gesture. The property is clean and well maintained, the pool and gym are nice perks, and management has been making an attempt to hold social events. If I had to move in again, I probably would - the good outweighs the bad in most situations. And if the most I can complain about is the elevators then life isn't so bad, is it?

Monterey review

New mgmt. has had some struggles since taking over in May, and building is older and thus has some maintenance issues. Also one safety related event that was not handled particularly well. Otherwise, the units are nice and have lots of space- good value!

Good Mid-Level Apartment

This building is not too noisy, but not too well managed. Safe, but older, so things break all the time. Close to Rockville Pike, free shuttle to White Flint Metro. Indifferent management, but quick responses from maintenance staff. Some truly nice tenants and some truly, deeply weird concierges. It's just like anywhere else for the price, but it does have a decently maintained gym, a 'business center,' a party room, and the free shuttle.

Good, but beware of pests

At first glance, this apartment looks nice. It's been renovated and is a ten minute walk to the White Flint metro. The price for the apartment seemed reasonable for the area, as well. However, upon move in, I discovered there was a huge pest problem with baby cockroaches. Every month, once a month, we had to totally take everything out of our kitchen so that pest control could spray our apartment. This didn't matter, the bugs would come back. Then I discovered the fire alarm often went off. People were so used to this, most didn't leave their apartments when it went off. Then, management changed how they would charge us for utilities. Instead of charging us by unit, they decided to split the charges of the entire building with each apartment. Some of this I discovered was illegal, according to Maryland codes. Apparently, in the state of Maryland you can get a free attorney to help you fight management companies that charge you for things that they are not supposed to. But by the time I learned this, I was already moving out.

Getting around North Bethesda

North Bethesda Reviews

8 reviews
Extremely convenient neighborhood if you work on the red line! It's a stone's throw away from Montgomery Mall and all of the restaurants and shopping available in Bethesda. Very low crime, and there is generally a police car parked in the area for peace of mind.
The North Bethesda area is nice. Pike and Rose, which already has some good places to eat, is growing and will hopefully add more restaurants. Within the area, there's a whole foods and Trader Joe's.
Not very many younger people live here. However, it’s between Rockville and Bethesda, so in either direction you can find nightlife or other activities if you want. The area is relatively quiet. As a single woman, I feel very safe and secure in this area.
The walkability is great here. We think that there is stuff to do from shopping to dining. There are stores and shops that are close to each other, so you can always make it a good night! We don't really think that the White Flint Metro is the safest place, so that kind of turns us off about the area. There are other parts of Bethesda that are way nicer.
Pike and Rose is the best! We are walking distance from white flint metro, surrounded by bars, restaurants, grocery stores, shopping... everything you could possibly want. All the convenience of DC but without the exorbitant price tag and congested traffic.
It is a family friendly neighborhood. Everyone is super nice and it is not nosy
this area has experienced significant development in the past couple of years. Plenty more restaurants and shopping areas than in the past! There is little nightlife, but it is becoming a much more exciting area than it used to be.
Pros:
-Close to 495, 270, and many grocery stores
-Close to Rock Creek Park
-Never felt unsafe walking around

Cons:
-Metro is close so there is some noise
-People are inconsiderate of their dog poop
