Good place for me

I've lived here for a month now and it's been a pretty decent experience. I have a studio that fits a bed, desk, table, and couch (I could probably put more). The closet is very spacious! There are hooks and two hanging poles for your clothes and two (very high) shelves so I store a lot there. Also, the kitchen and bathroom were renovated so I appreciate that everything is new. The one thing about the kitchen is that it's pretty small but I can't really complain much because I am just one person, so it's enough for me. There's a laundry facility in the building and a desk attendant 24/7 which is a plus. To be completely honest, the best thing about the Chancellor Apartments is the location. It has the most reasonable price I've seen in the very busy/lively Center City. Management is also very nice and helpful. They're located in the building so that's convenient if you have any issues/questions.

I would recommend it to anyone working in Center City because the location is right in the midst of everything. Everything is walkable and there's a PATCO stop right on the corner.

Colorful Environment

Mostly undergraduate students or young professionals. The location is great, because you have easy access to city transportation and a lot of great restaurants and bars just out the door. The only downside to that is that occasionally it can be very loud until late hours in the early morning.

Perfectly Adequate

It's loud, but it's central. There aren't many amenities, but there is a 24 hr doorman which in this area is crucial. Management isn't great, but they aren't horrible. Do I think this is the absolute best place to live in the area? No. But, I'm happy with the location, price and space and I plan on staying there at least another lease term. I've dealt with some horror show center city property management companies/apartment complexes and this is a welcome change of pace from that.

Totally Decent

Great location, great hardwoods, lots of light. Very noisy and the management company gets a solid C rating. If you're willing to sacrifice on service for location and price, this is definitely worth a look. But don't expect luxury living and prompt service.

All about the location. If it were any place else, I wouldn't think of living here.

Been here for a long time, over a decade. It’s the location that’s kept me here. Lots of shopping, restaurants, bars, grocery, banking, and business needs very close by. Never a problem getting a cab. Close to Orange, Blue, Green lines, PATCO, and Regional Rail. The proximity to Woody's at times requires you to pass through a gauntlet of drunken party people to enter and exit your residence. Sometimes they sit on the doorstep and won’t move out of the way for you to open the door, acting rudely and reluctantly if you even say “Excuse me.” 24-hour lobby personnel is a huge plus. They tend to be the nicest people. The laundry facilities are a joke. After a while you learn the hard way which machines work and which don't, but even then I wouldn't use them except as a last resort, and only with either bleach or borax. Hallways are in need of a long overdue renovation. They've renovated two floors so they can tell potential residents, "This is what it will look like on all floors soon." But they don't bother to mention that they've been renovating at a rate of one floor every 1.5 years so far. 21 floors remain in need of renovation at this writing. Trash builds up in the trash room on the weekends and stinks up the lobby by Sunday evening. Rodents sometimes have a field day in there, but I have never once seen any sign of rodents outside of the trash room. The trash really should be stored outside. Cockroaches are a rare sight, thankfully, but I have seen them in the hallways and in my unit a few times. Management has been atrocious at times, better at others. Current management is a noticeable improvement over recent years. But overall the management has been average or below for a building of this type. I’ve seen several apartments in the building at various times. The units themselves are OK, if you can get up on high enough of a floor to have the fantastic view that comes with it. Being higher up also means a lot more quiet at night, but you will still be annoyed by ambulances even at the top (24th) floor. Hardwood and tile everywhere except the 23rd floor, another plus. The residents don't interact much, as most of them are students or young professionals who are just passing through. No real sense of community here. Parking in this part of downtown is a nightmare. No matter which garage you choose, expect to pay $200/month minimum, and be prepared to leave your key on some occasions, as you won't be guaranteed a spot. Power outages have been an issue over the years but seem to have improved recently. Elevators were recently renovated, but for years they were constantly breaking down. Took them far too long to do something about it, as seems to be the pattern with anything that needs work. Maintenance staff are friendly, but the quality of work varies depending on who is doing it. In the end, I'd say its a great option for students, or young single professionals. For couples, its iffy, unless you really can handle the stress of downtown life, cramped living, while not having a dishwasher, reliable laundry, etc. For anybody else, its a lot of compromises just for the location. If you have, or will have a baby or young children, completely forget living here, it’d be a total disaster.

Great value for the location

The leasing office is nice. Maintenance is friendly, genuine, approachable and I'm pretty sure they remember my name.

Also the long hair lady (Jackie) that works security/front desk in the evenings is amazing, very personable and always asks me how I'm doing.

My apartment has gorgeous views. The only cons I would say at the Chancellor would be the hallways of each floor (they look terribly outdated), doors are dented and wallpaper and carpets are falling apart. Also I wish the yellow wall paint in the lobby would disappear. Why invest so much money on a marble floor to then ruin it with a tacky yellow paint job?

Anyways aside from those two negatives, it is great community to live in, super central and close to the best nightlife, great restaurants, businesses and shopping!

Truly Awful

I have had the building manager literally scream at me. They've been cited multiple times by the city for using unlicensed contractors and violating city ordinances by doing construction between the hours of 2-5am. The fire alarm goes off for no reason.

Midtown Village Reviews

Access to restaurants, attractions, and shops in Center City and even nearby in South Philly or Rittenhouse Square is superb. There is generally a lot of street traffic and drug addiction and homelessness are common in the area, but typically not a source of harm for passersby and also not much different than in any other major urban center in the U.S.
Best neighborhood in Center City - can't beat the price for what you get. Amazing location, just a short walk to Rittenhouse or Old City. Can't beat living in the heart of Center City, and only a 7 minute walk to the hospital. Plenty of night life.
Some crime in the area, but overall, great bar and restaurant scene with easy access to public transit.
Center city is arguably safe but sometimes there are some issues. Police are responsive.
Midtown Village is quickly becoming one of the best places in Philly to live. The quick downside is there's a lot of construction in the area, but that's also the positive if you're okay with the feel of a city that's constantly changing. The area already has lots of great bars and restaurants, and all the new construction is adding in great new options for grocery, coffee, and convenience items. There's now a Target, Mom's Grocery, multiple Wawas, Sweetgreen, etc. all in close proximity to mainstays like Reading Terminal.
Midtown Village is a fast-growing and both has great mainstay restaurants like El Vez and Barbuzzo as well as amazing chains like Chipotle and Sweet Green. The addition of a Target, Wawa, CVS, Starbucks, and Petco makes it even more accessible and naturally the location is as central as you can be in Philadelphia. In comparing options, you usually can get a bit of a discount versus Rittenhouse Square and Old City, mainly because the Midtown Village brand is still being built up, but you really can't beat the location and access to amenities. The only thing it's missing is a full-service grocery store, but between Reading Terminal Market, Target, Walgreens, and CVS you're pretty set. The main downside can be the noise and litter that comes with being in the heart of downtown, but it's a trade off I'm more than willing to make and has been getting better with time.
I love this neighborhood! It's very lively and great for young adults. There are a lot of cool restaurants/bars around. It's a little pricey but what can you expect from being in the center of a city like Philadelphia?
The area is filled with lots of young people. I don't feel unsafe walking around even at night because there are people out all the time. There are a couple of narrow streets I probably wouldn't walk through though.
The neighborhood is amazing and getting better every day! It combines access to great daily conveniences (coffee shops, Target, Wawa, etc.) with some of the best independent restaurants and bars in Philly. The location is incredibly central overall and transit options can get you pretty much anywhere in the city. It can get a bit noisy, though that's the price you pay for being downtown.
