Close to the University
A lot about the apartment sucks, but the price, square footage, and proximity to the College of Law pretty much override any qualms I have.
They convinced me to pay an extra 20 bucks a month for internet, but it doesn't even work in the bedroom. I also have very poor cell service everywhere except the living room.
The maintenance is just the landlord and a buddy of his fixing everything. So they aren't very good at it, but they're responsive. Anywhere you go that isn't a large company is going to likely feature one "handyman" that gets called for everything.
The paint job was good in the living room and terrible everywhere else. Crappy paint jobs are standard for cheap rentals because they do not know what they are doing.
This particular building is very old and has real wood floors. They're excellent, but when they replace/cover them with laminate, they use the crappiest, cheapest stuff I've ever seen. It's already peeling.
This property charges a $300 pet deposit but no monthly pet fees.
The good news is that it has a dishwasher. The bad news is that the gas bill includes hot water. So my gas bill is usually $40 and my electric is also $40.
There is not central air. The air conditioning is two window units, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. The kitchen will never be comfortable in the summer months because neither unit reaches it.
The outlets in this unit are not all grounded for three-prong use, so we had to get converters.
Laundry is in the basement and is currently $1.25 per wash and $1.25 per dry. That's the best rate I've seen. Most machines are $1.50, and local laundromats often charge even more. The basement has storage for each unit, but the place is invested with cockroaches. I've never seen any in my unit but the basement is crawling with them. Usually your laundry room is going to be disgusting no matter what.
The parking is included but it is a very tight squeeze. There are 4, single bedroom units. Each unit can have two cars. So this driveway is expected to fit 8 cars. It barely fits 8 sedans. I can't imagine someone having a larger vehicle. Often I have to get out of the passenger side of my car before my partner pulls into the spot, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to open my door.
The property manager will tell you that it's quiet, and I don't think she is LYING per se. She shows the units in the summer. But once school starts up, there is a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity behind this house and they get pretty stinking loud on the weekends. They typically party one night, either Friday or Saturday. The music is extremely loud and they'll stop around 1:30 am.
Lastly, the stairs that lead up to the entryway are extremely unsafe, and they are not properly lit at night.
