Okay Apartments

Decent apartments, cheaper then other locations; however, there have been issues with mice in some apartments. Close to campus and near many stores. Not too many amenities and often small apartments.

2bed/1bath

Good apartment if you aren’t looking for too many amenities. In the cheaper side compared to other complexes but not run down. There are issues with the elevators I have seen cockroaches and mice on the 8th floor. However, maintenance is normally quick to respond.

Solid Apartment for the Price

Columbia Uptown has pretty good amenities for the price. Parking is available for a fee and it is pet friendly. Includes on-site laundry and a gym. The building is pretty secure (you have to swipe in for entry). Overall, the building itself is quiet although there are families with kids that sometimes make noise in the halls. The units themselves are quite small but have a lot of storage. Ours has a dishwasher and stainless steel appliances.

The apartment is right off the Green/Yellow and the 52/54 bus stop. I use the bus to get to GW and overall it's pretty reliable.

It’s sufficient

It was very clean when I moved in, great location, and about a mile away from school. It’s not a bad walk. If you care about location and reliably good conditions, it’s great for the price point (I have a roommate in a 2br so my rent is $1212). There’s a good amount of living space.

The surrounding area has a lot to offer in terms of dining, the metro (5min walk), big retailers like Target and Bed Bath Beyond (5-8 min walk), and a really nice large park. However, there is quite frequent violent crime in the street right across. I’ve never had a problem but I feel the need to be cautious. The apartment building is fine, the gym is very basic and I’ve gotten packages stolen twice.

Personally I would invest in a nicer apartment especially if I knew I would be at home almost all the time. But this is still a decent place w affordable rent in a great location.

Great place to live

I enjoy living here. The area is close enough to school that I can walk 20 min or I can take the shuttle or I can take the metro. Sometimes it feels unsafe because there's shootings that happen down the street, and sometimes I can hear people yelling outside at 4 am in the morning. But other than the surrounding environment the facility is great. So nice to have a gym downstairs

Great

I have had a great experience at this apartment building thus far. The apartment is close to school and I walk everyday, which saves me money on transportation. My apartment is very spacious and close to many stores. I've had a few issues with the overall maintenance but the property manager has been helpful in resolving these issues.

Columbia Heights for the Right Price

I've been wanting to move to Columbia Heights for a while, but my salary one year out of school was making it look close to impossible unless I wanted to live in an old townhouse with 6 strangers. The Uptown has been my saving grace! The manager, Donnie, is wonderful and clearly goes above and beyond in his work. The building is stylish and well cared for - 24/7 maintenance goes a long way. And the price is hard to beat for a Columbia Heights apartment. There are some amenities you'll forgo to get that kind of price - there's no desk/concierge for instance, and no in unit laundry. But if you're looking for an affordable option with a good standard of living (they've got a gym after all) this is a great place.

Location saves it

I moved to this apartment due to a combination of price and location. Being a 10 minute walk to the vibrancy of 14th St, as well as the convenience of Target and the metro being 5 minutes away, has been the best part of living here. However, the to get a lower rent for the area, the building is old and in need of building-wide updates. While the interior of the apartment units have been updated, the rest of the building is sorely lacking. Our air conditioning and heating run constantly due to old windows that do nothing to conserve energy. The elevators are small and one is usually not functioning, or the elevators just decide to have a mind of their own and move at will. I'd love to move to a newer building, but cost is a big factor. This building is fine for now, as I said, location saves it.

Great Location, No Pests, Good Value BUT Management Slightly Unresponsive

Loved living here for the location and the price ($2250 for a 2-BR with a huge living room).

Appliances were new and worked well, but the apartment floor was covered in a really dingy wall-to-wall carpet that stained easily.

Loved having a gym in the building and the evening security guard made us feel pretty safe. That said, management is really unresponsive with regards to answering questions. We had to send about 4 emails after moving out in order to get our security deposit back.

Columbia Heights Reviews

61 reviews
Columbia Heights is nearby lots of restaurants and bars and we live right next to the metro.
I love this neighborhood. Shopping, such as Target and Best Buy, is easily accessible. There are great restaurants featuring diverse food options. The neighborhood itself is very diverse, with a large Latino population and a mix of other races and ethnicities as well. There's a wonderful farmer's market on Saturday mornings. Meridian Hill, or Malcolm X Park, is nearby. Other neighborhoods with great bars and restaurants are within walking distance, including Petworth/Park View and the U Street Corridor. The metro ride to American University is quite long; I'd recommend taking a bus to Tenleytown and then taking the AU bus to campus.

Regarding neighborhood safety, there are occasionally shootings unfortunately. I have never personally felt unsafe even at night, but realize others might feel so.
Great neighborhood for being close to Howard but slightly away at the same time (different vibe). Lots of restaurants and chill bars around plus (and more importantly), lots of grocery stores, gym, etc.

If you value quiet, try to go a block or two away from 14th street (which is a popular artery for fire engines / ambulances / police cars - i.e. lot of sirens).

Con: Increasing amounts of gentrification in this neighborhood is increasing rent prices
There are so many things to do in the area and the majority of them are a 15-20 minute walk away. There are 2 metro stations (both on the Green line) which makes going to see the monuments and museums a 20 minute trip. The area is great for experiencing life in the city.
There is always something going on! That is part of a city. I live across the street from Target, Bestbuy, Chiptole, liquor store, Cava, and CVS. Things are within walking distance (i.e., U-street is about 15 minute walk down 14th).
I love Columbia Heights! I'm two blocks off of 14th Street where transit (yellow/green) and stores are, including Giant, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and several eateries! It's also a quick walk to AdMo and U Street corridor.
Nowhere else in DC is there such a melting pot of culture, food and things to do. Everything is in walking distance and there is no need for a car. If your are a foodie your a few blocks from U street or Adams Morgan,
It's not a great neighborhood intrinsically, nor is it particularly close to GW. But it's close to pretty much everything else while being far enough away/still being gentrified so that it's cheaper.
