Good, quiet neighborhood, cheaper than UWS

I lived in this apartment for four and a half years, and it has been a good experience. The apartment is big for its price and has a living and dining room, as well as an eat-in kitchen. The apartment is a second-floor walk-up -- building has 5 floors with 4 apartments on each floor. The neighborhood is very quiet considering it is properly in Manhattan. Our apartment is unique because it does not have a wall between the living room and the dining room, making it a huge open space; every other apartment in the building has the two rooms separated.

I got lucky because I found the apartment in January of the year I graduated college, so I was able to lock in a much lower rate than what they charge for the summer renters, and that kept my rent much lower -- management only raised it by about $50 each year, and I know other apartments in the building go for $200-300 more per month than ours, because they were rented over the summer. Strongly recommend trying to get an apartment in the off-months (November through March) -- it could save you hundreds of dollars.

The neighborhood is just below Columbia University, so you get the benefit of all the shops, restaurants and bars that want to be near a college campus while also living far enough away that you never have to deal with college students. It is very much still in the Upper West Side but is cheaper than most UWS apartments because they are still accommodating for student renters.

It is about 20 minutes from campus, which is very reasonable. It is close enough that you can go home during lunch if you wanted to.

Big apartment, quiet neighborhood, comparatively cheaper

This apartment is at the upper end of the Upper West Side neighborhood, which means it has all the benefits of the UWS atmosphere for significantly less cost. Because it is so close to Columbia, you get the benefit of college-priced bars, restaurants and stores, but none of the actual college students. The neighborhood on the whole is extremely quiet. It is highly accessible to the 1, B and C trains, as well as many bus routes. It takes about 20 minutes to get from the apartment to Fordham Law School, which is great. It can be difficult to run back and forth if you forget something in the apartment, but it is a doable option. It certainly is not cumbersome enough to prevent coming in on the weekends.

The apartment itself is really big, but the bedrooms are small. It has an eat-in kitchen and huge living and dining room (other apartments in the line have the two rooms separated by a wall) which more than compensates for the size of the bedrooms (with or without the dividing wall). The bedrooms are definitely big enough for a full/double bed, and they both have sizable closet(s). The apartment is a second-floor walk-up, and while there is no laundry in the building, there are many laundromats within a block of the apartment, all of whom offer free pickup and delivery. Other apartments in the building have three bedrooms
