The Management is terrible

The new renovations and free parking cannot cover up the horrendous management team that infests the leasing center from 9-5 on weekdays. They penalize you for every smallest thing from taking out the trash 5 minutes too late to leaving the garbage out 5 minutes past the collection time. They themselves however constantly miss trash pick up, and turn around to penalize you for leaving the trash out.

Come the end of the lease, they will do everything possible to keep every cent of your deposit. Cheques given to their office constantly disappear and are lost, and you are penalized for late rent payments due to their mistakes.

They say they have free breakfast every weekday, but you are lucky to have it even show up two days out of five. On the days it does, it is just a jug of juice that lasts 5 cups and 5 pre-packaged muffins. If you aren't there within 5 minutes of breakfast starting, it is gone.

The pool is useless and is just a peeing spot for dogs. The grass is littered with dog droppings that no one bothers to pick up.

Overall, they advertise themselves as a luxury apartment complex, but the only one living in luxury is the management themselves, living off of all the money they scammed off of you.

Great for MMS students

I really enjoyed living at The Heights, mostly because almost half of the MMS program was living there and it was nice to be close to everyone and always be aware of when people are socializing by the pool or in someone's apartment. The pool/grill area is fantastic, but the gym is very small and could be better equipped. Overall, decent value and I would recommend staying here especially if you are in the MMS program.

Overpriced, great location

It is up to the class--if a lot of your classmates are living at the Heights like mine did, it'll be fine socially. I became very close friends with classmates because of our close proximity. The location is very convenient, and the bus picks you up right outside the complex.

Nice place close to friends

Because most of the MMS class lived at the heights it felt like our own little community and increased our bond as a class. The apartments are very nice. Overpriced but that is to be expected in any college town area. Management was good about responding to any maintenance requests in a timely fashion. It is within walking distance to class which was a nice added bonus. I really enjoyed my time here this year. The pool is very nice. The gym is rather small but if you just wanna go for a quick run on the treadmill it works. They claim they have a continental breakfast but don't hold your breath on that. There is however always coffee available and there are computers and a printer. The main building was nice to have to meet with your teams to do group work. Overall, great place to live and if I had to do it all over again i'd probably live here again.

Be wary of hidden charges

I had negative experiences with Management at the Heights. They actively try to set you up for additional charges not including in your rent. Subpar quality of facilities given the price of rent. The only reason why it has been an enjoyable experience was that a majority of my program stayed there and therefore we had a strong social presence.

Great location and for socializing, but pricier and poor management.

The Heights is a great complex in terms of its location to Fuqua, especially if you don't have your own car. It's a short walk and close to public transportation. Most of the MMS program lives here, so great for socializing, and the pool is great. However, it is pricier than the other options, and the management is pretty bad.

Heights...

The Heights is a trap. You end up living here because most of the class does and you pay more than Belmont (right across the street). Great for a social life, but management is terrible. Also, there are pointless gates for cars but not surrounding the entire property.

Assistants at leasing office-could be nicer with warmer service;

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
