Amazing Apartment

If you're willing to compromise on amenities this apartment is amazing! It has a lot of personality, floor to ceiling windows. Location is smack in the middle of downtown, which is very walkable. I could not be happier. This apartment building doesn't have a pool or gym, however, which could be a dealbreaker for some people.

Beautiful Apartments & Great Location

I love living here! Management is very responsive to issues and my apartment has so much personality. It's also in a great location very close to restaurants and shops in downtown.

This building does not have its own gym or pool, but these are amenities I wouldn't use anyway to be honest. Would highly recommend living here!

Great area and apartment

ATC apartment is beautiful with high ceilings, massive windows, wood floors, new appliances, and good bathroom. While the location is ideal if you want to be right downtown, it's worth noting that the 9th street area is more of "downtown" in the traditional main-street sense of the term.

Pros to flag: Great communal courtyard, walking distance from downtown attractions (Bulls ballpark, restaurants, DPAC), aesthetically pleasing, responsive management, historical site.

Cons to flag: thin walls (can hear neighbors); some apartments have weird floor plans because it's an industrial-to-resi conversion; limited availability of units; walk to parking; no in-building gym (there is a YMCA right there); slow elevator; no full-size grocery in walking distance

Getting around Downtown Durham

Downtown Durham Reviews

I have always felt safe in the area and love that so many restaurants are walkable. Prior to COVID-19, it was also a huge benefit to walk to DPAC for off-broadway shows or to the Durham Bulls stadium for a game.
Downtown is the best place to live in Durham! I love walking to bars, restaurants, shops, and the Farmer's Market. It is super easy to drive to campus as well.
Great experience. Some of the best bars ans restaurants are in Downtown, as well as the DPAC, Bulls stadium and other things to do. It's close to the American Tobacco Campus and Trail. One of the "busiest" places in Durham.
Very fun area, nice to have a lot of bars/restaurants in walking distance. Drive to school is quick and easy.
Van Alen is in a great spot in Durham. Several large new apartment complexes are being built around it. It is also right next to the Durham Courthouse which has a 24/7 police presence and patrol cars are constantly pulling in and out of the courthouse garage at all hours.

With that being said, Van Alen is still in Durham.
It takes on average less than 10 minutes for me to go from Van Alen to the science drive parking garage at Duke.
It's been cool but not too much to do because of covid. Weekends can get loud outside because of the close proximity to bars and restaurants. If everything was open it would be sweet.
Up and coming but a good choice of restaurants about about 0.5miles away
We have enjoyed living downtown well enough, but we have not been able to take advantage of much of it due to COVID.
