So far it has been a good experience. The apartment complex is making new updates to a lot of units and Crystal City along with Pentagon City and Potomac Yard is getting "rebranded" as National Landing, so there is a bunch of new things opening up. There are a ton of great restaurants and shops around the area and a it is about a 10 minute walk to the metro station. I will say there is a lot of construction in the area, but the noise has not been that big of an issue.

Laundry is a Pain

The on-site laundry is a pain. They are currently installing units in the apartments but that will take months to finish.

Great Management!

Management responsive to comments. Lots of great community events. Clean, well-kept space. Apartments are large with lots of closet space. Low noise-level. Great amenities include pool (outside) and gym. Ability to use amenities (i.e. indoor pool) of sister sites in Crystal City. Pets allowed. Friendly staff. Relatively peaceful and pleasant area. Close to DC, the airport, and VRE.

Downside are the shared laundry machines, which often do not work. I believe that they are working on fixing this issue.

Pretty Affordable

The Buchanan is affordable, clean, accessible to transportation and the DCA. It is a choice for students who are living on a budget, but want a nice place to live.

What is there to say...

Living in the city is expensive. Sometimes, you can have a decent place and a good location, which is what the Buchanan is. Sure, it may take them hours if not days to process packages. Sure, sometimes they turn off the water in the middle of the night/day (on the regular!). Sure, we have the occasional mouse. You can't beat the location and the price is decent, so I deal.

Great for this location

Buchanan apartments is a great choice for someone who still wants to live in the city but not to pay a lot. The only minus is washer & dryer room is outside the apartment, but located on each floor. We do enjoy living here! A lot of great restaurants, coffee shops, amenities nearby. You still need to drive to do groceries tho.

Decent building

Lots of space for your money, but some issues with management from time to time. Pet-friendly but you have to pay a deposit AND a monthly fee. Nice pool area, free small gym, fast elevators, and free coffee every morning. Close to the metro and right across from the Crystal City underground.

Great value, but staff is unfriendly

I was thrilled with the price and size of my apartment when I moved in, but the employees at this establishment are awful. They often make you feel as though you are doing all of the wrong. I do however love the pool and location. The laundry is okay.

Getting around Crystal City

Crystal City Reviews

41 reviews
Crystal City has been a convenient place to live because I work there. However, it is not the most accessible to AU. I leave work early, but I don't have enough time to metro there, so I have to take an Uber from work, but it's manageable because I only go to campus twice a week. Although that's a little inconvenient, the area is very safe for a woman living alone, and it's very easy to get to downtown DC. There are many restaurants and grocery stores nearby, as well as the Pentagon City mall, which is within walking distance. My only complaint is that there is a lot of construction.
Extremely safe and friendly neighborhood. I have gotten very involved in my local Catholic church that is right down the street. You can instantly tell the difference when you leave DC that your environment has changed. The people are friendly, you are not scared that you will get robbed, and there are no signs of blight. I would highly recommend the area.
Overall, Crystal City is a great place to live, and often overlooked when compared to Pentagon City. This is a pretty suburban area, with a mix of homes and apartment complexes. There are tons of restaurants nearby, and it's enjoyable since they're mostly walking distance. Added perk - Arlington Public Library tucked into the neighborhood between the main Crystal City area and surrounding Pentagon City area.
If you have a family it’s great, if your single it’s great also. Easy access to major highways and metro. Tons of activities and events through out the year. Safe environment to walk at night.
Generally a more commercial area, so it is pretty quiet at night. Crystal Drive is full of cool restaurants and bars.
There are always people walking around in the neighborhood. They are either working adults on their way to lunch, military, or families going to eat. Community staples like the library, public pool, and outdoor space are only about a 10 to 15 minute walk. There is a lot of public green space and the "long bridge" is a great place to walk. If you have an active pet there is plenty of access to trails and sidewalks to ensure that they get the amount of exercise they need.

If you can find roommates, it is affordable. Just make sure you have the self-control to not eat out everyday!
The neighborhood is very walkable and has very accessible public transportation. It's not somewhere you typically would go out at night since nightlife is nonexistent, but Amazon just moved in and there is semblance of that changing. It's great if you are active (many gyms, parks, and Mt. Vernon Trail Access), enjoy restaurants like Chick Fil A (one right outside my building), and want to be close to everything.
It is close to almost everything. Metro? Check. Mall? Check. Grocery store? Check. Place to eat and drink? you betcha. I feel safe walking around at night. The only draw back is that there is a fire station close by and you get to hear the wailing of the sirens. You get use to them though.
