Decent Apartment Complex in West Ashley
These apartments are slightly pricier than I would have liked, but my roommate and I have been in our 2b/2ba apartment here for over a year and it works fine for us. It's about a 30 minute drive to downtown when traffic is light, more like 45-65 minutes during rush hour. There is also a pool and a gym, which were fantastic to use pre-COVID.
The biggest selling points for me were the location (fairly safe area, right next to grocery stores and i-526) and that the apartment allows students to have a guarantor.
So, if you don't make enough money to meet their requirements (which I think was something like $45-50k a year between me and my roommate), a parent or relative can basically vouch for you if they have enough income, although a guarantor has to have something like $80k in income, if I remember correctly.
These apartments are also pet friendly, although we did have to pay a $300 deposit for my cat and $20 monthly in pet rent.
As far as the negatives go, try not to get an apartment that faces east/northeast if you move here. Ours faces east, and our living room is dark even with the windows open. It's dreary.
Also, if you hate noise, don't get an apartment on the first floor. They do landscaping in the spring, summer, and fall, and you'll hear the sound of leafblowers for a few days in a row every couple of weeks in the late morning/early afternoon.
Other than that, this is a nice option in a safe area that's within driving distance of downtown. Also, the bedroom closets are huge. Management is also incredibly helpful and responsive if you have any questions or issues.
