Solid option

Feel like we get a good value for our money. Upsides - good space and the building is quiet for how big it is. Downside - no 24/7 security, no parking on site

Nice units, lack storage

Nice units that have little cabinet / closet space (can rent storage unit). Maintenance is responsive, appliances are nice, gym is a good size for the building.

Would not recommend The Scholar/Centrum - Kellogg Student

Centrum (no one calls it The Scholar) is very expensive considering the mediocre quality of finishes, amenities, and management. Almost half of the units lost heat for several days in early 2024 during a severe cold snap. TLC Management took no accountability beyond providing electricity-intensive space heaters without offering rent concessions to those impacted. There are zero social benefits for a Kellogg student to live at Centrum; there is very little socializing between residents. Units also sorely lack storage. On the bright side, the kitchens are better than those at other buildings popular with Kellogg students. Units are also quiet thanks to the thickness of walls and concrete floors.

Good Amenities

Staying in 2B2B, have all needed amenities. Dryer washer in unit and dishwasher is available. Floor plan is good and it's fairly spacious. Internet has been patchy after vendor change recently - hopefully it'll get cleared soon. Overall, the apartment is really good. Not the cheapest compared to other options in Evanston, but it's worth the money you pay

Great Experience.

I absolutely loved my experience of living at The Scholar. The property manager- Mike is extremely kind and helpful. He is trying to improve the experience of the tenants.

It is nice to be able to lean in when you want and get your own space when you do not want to be very social. Great amenities as well.

Good experience but opportunities to improve.

I lived in this apartment building for two years and overall had a fairly pleasant experience, though of course any building has its quirks. Building amenities are pretty new and the apartment fixtures and appliances generally work well. My unit never had any heating/cooling or internet issues like some others have mentioned. Even on the highest floor, if you live on the side that faces the train tracks, you will still hear the muffled sound of the train going by when the windows are closed, but you get used to it and can mask it with the sound of a fan easily. Top floor has indoor and outdoor social spaces that can be used to host events like dinners and parties while being respectful of the other residents. A pleasant 20-25 minute walk to Kellogg Global Hub. Convenient 10-15 min walk to Trader Joe’s and Jewel Osco. Very convenient to catch the Metra or purple line across the street when traveling to/from Chicago.
Halfway through my time here the building transferred to new ownership. The new office management is great - Mike, Troy, and the maintenance team have all been very considerate and responsive in my experience and have worked hard to even take care of issues left behind by the old building owners/management that were incompetent (e.g. they improved the package room organization, added more security cameras, etc.). The new building owners, TLC Management, could improve the living experience here by 1) adding a 24-hour security person like many of the other large Evanston apartments have, especially given this building’s proximity to the Davis bus/train station and 2) having a more reasonable annual rent increase because that caused many challenges this year for the predominantly full-time student residents. Overall, the building itself is good and in a safe enough location and the onsite management team is super helpful. The building owners should consider making the above changes to make this a great rental experience.

The Scholar – Best Apartment Community in Evanston

Prior to choosing The Scholar I toured several other buildings also frequented by the Kellogg/Northwestern set. Personally, I found The Scholar to be the best of the bunch for its very usable gym, tasteful modern floorplans, and new management that took over the building about a year ago. Mike and Troy are always around and have been extraordinarily responsive. I've had no issues with my unit since moving in and based on some of the other reviews I was initially was concerned about potentially having issues with getting decent internet service, but for $30 more a month I get a gig up and down which has been flawless thus far. Everything in downtown Evanston is within walking distance and campus is just a 20 minute walk away. If you want a quieter and more elevated place to live instead of a building that feels like a dorm, I'd highly recommend The Scholar.

Do NOT rent here

I am a student at Kellogg and have been living here for around 8 months. I would not recommend living here.

1. Apartments by themselves are good and spacious, but the rent is inflated because Kellogg students live here.

2. Management is extremely poor. You rarely will find someone in the office the first time you go. Maintenance issues are never addressed promptly. For example, the building has a common internet and we have had issues with the internet for months and they are still not resolved.

Though the apartments are good, extremely poor management makes your life difficult if you ever have any issues. You can find a better apartment at the same price elsewhere.

Downtown Evanston Reviews

Lots of apartments and family homes in the area. I always see someone riding their bike or walking throughout the day. It's a block from the police station, and only 2-3 blocks to downtown. Close to intercampus shuttle, 201 bus stop (3 blocks), and Dempster purple line (1.5 blocks). Nice area to live, quiet at night.
Downtown Evanston is a great place to live if you're a NU student. It's super easy to get to campus via either walking or the bus, and has convenient groceries within walking distance. The food scene is not the best, but good enough.
Evanston is the epitome of a college town, everything you need and most of what you want is within a 10 minute walk.
I really enjoy living in downtown Evanston. Everything that I need is within walking distance, and it is a 10-15 minute walk to my classes.
Safe, walkable area, even late at night depending on the streets you take. Great for convenience in terms of getting to campus, no car needed, access to many public transit options. You lose out in terms of cheap food options and fun nightlife - there are only a couple of bars open after 9PM on the weekends and for cheap food you're stuck with Chipotle or at best Tomate. But the lake and beach are within walking distance and you live close to other NU students making it well worth it for me.
Evanston really is a nice town. There's loads of food, both chains and otherwise, and a number of shops and things if you don't mind moving around a little. Driving in the greater Evanston area is not a lot of fun, I will say. I get the sense that the city doesn't much like the University and its constituents, and that the students don't always respect the city. It's not a perfect relationship, but it works. I can easily walk or take transit to class on the Evanston campus, and when I have class in Chicago I take transit, which usually takes more than an hour in the morning and close to an hour coming home.
Downtown Evanston is super cute! There are tons of restaurants and a handful of bars so I find that it offers a good bit of variety for the neighborhood size. There are street festivals, a great farmers market, summer concerts in the square and other community events I've enjoyed. Would highly recommend Evanston anyone who wants access to the city but a self-sufficient "urban burb" type neighborhood.
Pros: Great location near key Kellogg hangouts like World of Beer, Nevins, Five and Dime, Prairie Moon, etc. Also convenient to Bennison's Bakery! Great for late nights- can get home in < 5 minutes without ubering. Also near both Metra and L- ideal if you plan to spend some of your time in downtown Chicago.

Cons: Long walk from the Global hub. Closest grocery store is Whole Foods, a bit of a hike to TJ's and Jewel.
