Convenience comes at a price

Pros:
- Getting my lease set up was very easy, particularly as I was doing it from overseas.
- Apartment is a good size, warm, and has a nice view.
- Mac Properties is very prompt and effective with performing maintenance.
- Good location - walking distance from Whole Foods and all the shops on 53rd, and fairly quick bus trip to UChicago, but also not too far away from Downtown.

Cons:
- There are plenty of hidden costs, most of which are unfair. For example, Mac Properties "generously" waived my "application fee" but then charged me with an "administration fee" for processing my application. After reviewing my application, Mac then charged me a second "administration fee" on the basis that I was a foreigner (I am not making this up) which I really had no option but to pay seeing as I had already paid the first fee (which was non-refundable). Where I come from we have a word for this: "extortion". A further example is that you have to pay your utilities through Mac, and they charge you a not insignificant "service" fee for being the middleman between you and the utilities company. Unfortunately the moment there is a problem with any utilities Mac's "services" will suddenly be unavailable and they will tell you to deal with the utilities company directly (even though Mac will often be in the best situation to deal with the problem).

- My apartment is perfectly adequate, but also a bit tired (the walls are paper thin as well, so if you have noisy neighbours then you're in for a bad time). Similarly, some of the common areas are desperately in need of an upgrade (the elevators are terrible). This is balanced against the fact that, as mentioned above, the maintenance team does a very good job of promptly fixing things whenever they break.

Ok

The apartment itself is nice. It is spacious and the finishes are above average. The view is nice. The gym has good cardio equipment and so-so weight training equipment. I still feel the price is artificially inflated, and that Mac arbitrarily raises the rent at the end of the lease to induce turnover.

Great social scene

Good place to make friends and be near the social action, but a bit farther from Hyde Park bars and restaurants.

Worth the premium for being close to others and the great views.

Happy living here for two years during law school.

Not worth the overpriced rent, but a great place to live if you can afford it and the amenities are worth the high price to you.

Regents Park

Somewhat expensive for Hyde Park, but at least in our case I would say it's worth it--tons of space, good amenities, and a fantastic view. Might be even better with some of the more modern units. If you spend a little time finding a room with a great view and wait for a decent price (Mac prices seem to fluctuate throughout the summer), I think you can find something that works for you.

The place to live as a 1L…

The place to live as a 1L. You have your own space, great amenities, apartments are spacious. Most 1Ls live here and in Hyde Park in general.

A Good Value For Those Willing to Share

Regents is a known entity, with a lot of value for those able to share a two-bedroom apartment. The upsides are plentiful, with lots of other law students nearby and conveniently located public transportation. Slightly more expensive in general than other Hyde Park accommodations.

Regents Park is a good place to live for your 1L year

I found Regents Park to be a great place to live during your 1L year. It's close and far enough from the school, so you can have your own space while being close enough to go home quickly if you forgot something at home. Most other 1Ls live there, which makes it also a great place to live socially. Most parties and social events happen in Regents Park.

I love living near the university. I think it is very convenient for attending UChicago events. Most of our class lives here, so it makes it very easy for reunions and parties. I take the bus to the loop on the weekends. Living here does not mean you can't experience the loop fun. But people that live in the Loop usually don't come to our class parties because it is far away.
Hyde Park is a great neighborhood, especially for 1L year. There is plenty to do with new bars and restaurants -- and grocery stores, like Trader Joes -- coming in every year. While it's not as "happening" as the Loop or River North, for example, it's nice to be near the Law School as a 1L and most of your classmates will be in Hyde Park as well. I've lived in Hyde Park for 6 years now and can attest that it is very walkable and very safe, and it has a nice neighborhood feel that you don't get as much in the Loop or Loop-adjacent neighborhoods.
Pretty close to campus, about a 10 minute drive/bike ride. Seems safe, at least east of MLK Blvd. Pretty quiet overall, Maple Court is right next to an elementary school so there is some noise in the morning and when the kids are at recess. Hyde Park Produce is walkable, but not super close. Whole Foods is opening up at Lake Park around 51st/Hyde Park Blvd. soon. Large shopping area at 47th and Lake Park with Walgreens and Subway. Mostly fast food on 47th St. No bars, coffee shops, or anywhere nearby to hang out.
Hyde Park is extremely boring. I live here because the school is here and the commute is easy. There are very few good restaurants and no nightlife whatsoever. Luckily, getting downtown is cheap and easy. I've never felt unsafe during the daytime, but I certainly don't go walking around at night.
The neighborhood feels safe overall, as I live right on the border with Hyde Park. There is a dearth of businesses (stores, restaurants, bars) in the area, but that is true for all of Hyde Park. Proximity to the Law School is the best part of where I live.
My building is a 5 min walk to Whole Foods and 12 min walk to Target. Hyde Park is getting more restaurants and bars, but I wish there were better options. It is nice to be close to my friends and close to campus though.
It's a cute neighborhood, lots of young professionals, beautiful architecture, close proximity to school and super close to the city. Downside is few good food options and can get boring. But I love the free bus!
I've been a Chicago resident for most of my life, and I can safely say this is one of my favorite places to live. It's affordable and enjoyable.
