Strongly Recommend

Living here is excellent, basically nothing to worry except some noise at night (train passing by...)

Solid Apartment, Not Great Value

We like our place. It is in a great location, right next to the 172 bus and directly above Whold Foods. Staff is nice. The gym is solid. It is pretty expensive for Hyde Park and maintenance is unreliable.

Overall Nice Building

The building has a newer feel in regard to appliances and amenities. The gym and terrace are very nice and they have programs such as free 15 cups of coffee a month which are nice perks. Overall, the building is also quiet and the rooms have quite a bit of light. Packages are handled efficiently as well. The main con is that maintenance can take a while sometimes.

Higher Price for Nice Amenities

Went to a more expensive apartment this year, and it was a good move. The apartment is spacious and amenities are nice. Downsides that even with the amenities it's pricy, the temperature is hard to control, and the lights from the high school across the street stay on all night so it can be hard to fall asleep at night. The location is perfect, though, right by a 172 stop, near 53rd street, and right above the Whole Foods.

Great place to live as a student

The building is clean and the all the facilities consistently work. The gym, parking garage, and resident lounge are great amenities that are easy to use and not over-crowded. The building is right next to several bus stops and the Metra, so it's very well-located for getting around Hyde Park and getting to downtown Chicago. Also, the actual unit is very spacious and just as I expected. The views from our living room are amazing!

Great Property, Not Cheap

I definitely recommend CHP, but it is probably more expensive than many Hyde Park apartments. Our apartment is big and we have never had big problems. The electricity is extra and parking adds a lot to the cost too. Washer/dryer and dishwasher in-unit are great, and the AC is strong.

Location is ideal for the 172 line and proximity to Whole Foods, especially for the winter.

We get a ton of light in the apartment because of the big windows, but it is odd that there are no light fixtures in the ceiling in the den (might be the biggest drawback, along with relatively thin walls). The staff is great, and it is nice to be ensured that your packages are secured by the front desk. Management could be more responsible, but that is typical for MAC.

The Law School NEEDS to do a better job letting students know about this property

- Right on the 172 bus line (just a 15 min ride to the law school)
- Right above a Whole Foods (I can go to the grocery store without going outside), and a direct 5 min walk to Trader Joe's
- Cheaper than Shoreland Apartments, which the Law School advertises to new students
- Incredibly nice staff, events, etc.
- Beautiful rooms
- Right next to all the restaurants on 53rd St.
- Can also pay for parking

Good

I really like living here. The place feels organized and secure. With two other roommates it does not cost me too much. I like that it has a gym and easy access to transportation.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
