Berk Main

It’s a very nice place to live, but it is expensive, management is pushy about their improvement projects which are disruptive to daily life, and repairs take a long time.

Close to Duke, nice area

Really nice area and walking distance to Duke (15 mins to med school). Can hear the train go by several times a day, and the noise level depends on what side of the building you’re on. Parking in gated garage below the building with direct access to the buildings (interior doors, feels safe).

Love living at Berk Main!

Berk main is relatively close to campus; students either walk the 15-20ish minutes or take the H1 Duke bus route, which picks you up right in front of the apt building and drops you off right in front of the hospital next to our med school building. It's also really close to 9th street, which has restaurants and stuff, grocery stores like Whole Foods, and not too far from downtown Durham. Berk Main is super clean - there are folks cleaning all around daily, and there is a trash valet service from your door 5 days per week. The gym is nice but just kinda has the basics. The common areas (demo kitchen, business areas, lounge areas, etc.) are all super beautiful and clean. The leasing and maintenance managers are also amazing. The leasing managers were so helpful as I moved across the country, and the maintenance workers have always been so quick to respond to any requests. I always feel super safe no matter what time I'm getting home, and I haven't had any issues with packages or anything. I think my apartment is really beautiful and gets a lot of light. I love the Nest included in every apartment because it is so convenient to control temperatures either automatically or from my phone on my way home. This building is also super quiet and lowkey (maybe thick walls), which is perfect for students I think (the only noisy thing is the train). I have loved living here, and my only qualm is that it is a little pricey, but I think that it's worth the price. They also have a lot of free social events, which are really cool. If you're a pet owner, it seems like a great place for pets because they have a pet spa, spacious floor plans, balconies/patios, and a little doggy run area outside.

Berkshire Main Review

The building is close to school and has great amenities. The noise from the train can get annoying at times. Neighbors, parking, and safety are good.

Nice facility with poor management

Rooms and amenities are very nice, but we have had far too many issues with management. The location is good, but the train is noisy.

Nice location, good quality of apartment and common areas

Very nice complex with good quality of both the apartments and the common areas. Location is great (5 minutes walking distance from B9/S9 and 9th street, 7 minutes driving distance from Fuqua). The complex is close to a train crossing but it didn't bother my studying and sleeping experience

Getting around Ninth Street

Ninth Street Reviews

Neighborhood has been great. Haven't been commuting to school all that frequently for obvious reasons, but takes less than 10 minutes to do so. I can grab everything I need and meet with friends all within walking distance. Durham could use more street lights in general, but in terms of safety, I think 9th street is your best option!
Best place to live hands down. Next to the supermarket, so many food options and many complexes in the area. Near downtown and Duke. Great if you’re new in town because it is super safe. Perfect if you have a car because the only downside is that depending on what Duke school you’re in it might not be walking distance.
Ninth Street is super walkable and majority of Fuquans live in the area. Definitely worth it to pay a little more to live in walking distance of so many classmates. Plus the restaurants on Ninth Street are great, and a short walk (~3 mins) to East Campus to use the walking trail!
Everything is close: other complexes like S9, B9; bars like flying bull, the tavern, supermarkets like Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, East campus hiking route.

You can get to the school by bus (45 mi) or by car (10 min). Carpooling is very commom.
Neighborhood is fine. All the Duke grad students live in the same area so it makes for a pleasant student community, and there are some decent restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
Harris Teeter and Whole Foods are right nearby, and the area feels generally safe. 5 min from the highway if you need to drive outside of Durham. ~10 min to get to the WaDuke/Science Drive.
The 9th St. neighborhood is great because it is within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants on 9th St. It could be better if it were closer to Fuqua and/or downtown Durham.
All the restaurants around the 9th street area are within 5 mins walk from the complex. The campus is an 8-10 minute drive. Downtown Durham is also an 8-10 minute drive away.
