Magnificent Mile
A City Within Chicago
Magnificent Mile is one of Chicago's largest and most frequented neighborhoods with a wide array of restaurants, attractions, and shopping destinations to enjoy. The area is home to a massive amount of quality dining options ranging from the city's best Italian food at Spiaggia to satisfying cheeseburgers at the Billy Goat Tavern. Residents swear that there is no better way to escape the work grind than with a happy hour cocktail at the Hancock Building's 96th floor Signature Lounge, but for a more grounded experience, Streeter's Tavern is popular for its cheap beers and pool.
Residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to local attractions. Fans of contemporary art can visit The Museum of Contemporary Art or the Loyola University of Modern Art while the Broadway Playhouse and Lookingglass Theatre offer a mix of both classic and experimental plays to watch. Through the years, Magnificent Mile has gained a reputation as Chicago's premier shopping destination with a host of stores interspersed between three massive shopping malls. A unique neighborhood, Magnificent Mile effortlessly combines comfort, style, and entertainment into one cozy package.

Magnificent Mile —
8.8/10 Rating
(based on 19 neighborhood reviews)
Since the apartment is right on N Michigan, the area can be a bit touristy, however, it's easy to avoid walking on Michigan ave by going out the side or basement door of the building, depending on where you're heading. I do feel very safe living here. Michigan ave is always very well lit at night. The commute to school is less than 10 minutes. The Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Jewel Osco are all about a 5 minute walk away, and the Target is 10 minutes away.

It feels safe and easy to get around, but a large part of it is the hospital so there is a bit less to do than other neighborhoods. That being said, it is so close to River North, Gold Coast etc., that it's not hard to find great restaurants and bars.

Very close to the hospital, just 2 blocks away. It's on the north side of campus so more quiet, a bit farther from where other people tend to live though.

The building is located just off of Mag Mile, so there's a lot of people around and great restaraunts and shopping! It's perfect that it's not directly on Mag Mile, however, because you have less congestion and noise around you.

You're closer to more of the upscale shopping and dining experiences in Chicago while being a short walk to the Magnificent Mile. The area is generally safe and busy.

I chose to live here because it's very secure and lots of police are always around. Not too much crime in the area

The neighborhood is very bougie, but that's the area around magnificent mile, streeterville, and gold coast (this is the edge of all three)

As someone new to the area, I could not imagine a better neighborhood that is close and has it's own character.

Pros: very safe, great transportation options in the Red line and all the busses you can think of, close to all of the entertainment and social life options of River North without the price
Cons: 35-50 minute commute via the 2 to Hyde Park (but it's a great bus! Mostly U of C commuters and very reliable.) Keep reading

You live at the edge of Streeterville and Gold Coast in this building. Michigan Ave is right next store. It's an easy walk to amazing restaurants in Streeterville, Gold Coast and River North and it's 2 blocks from the hospital.

Streeterville is River North's cheaper, more serious little brother. Mostly students, people who work in the loop, hospital staff, and tourists.

There are a lot of famous Chicago restaurants and shopping landmarks close by. The only thing I wish there were more of would be grocery stores. There is a Whole Foods, Jewel and Trader Joes, however still 3-4 block walk for me from where I live in the Gold Coast.
