South Loop —
8.4/10 Rating
(based on 145 neighborhood reviews)
South Loop has a lot of character. With all the locally owned restaurants, book stores, wine shops, and cafes there is always something to do. Being on the border of the loop means you will have great public transportation options so that Chicago’s many other vibrant neighborhoods are also easily accessible. Check out the concerts, art festivals, book festivals, and year round indoor and outdoor farmers markets.
Easy access to the lake shore drive walking and bike trails. Protected bike lanes for riding in the city. Keep reading

Not the most exciting neighborhood in the city. But much more urban than Hyde Park, good access to the basics (groceries, shopping, food, drink, etc.), and very easy access to the rest of the city. The perfect compromise neighborhood for a student that wants to feel "in" in the city with an easy commute to campus.

I love living in the South Loop! It's really nice to be somewhere that I can get to Hyde Park for school, and to also explore downtown. Everything I could possibly need (groceries, restaurants, coffee shops, library) is within a 10 minute walk of my building and it feels more like part of the city than Hyde Park does. I really prioritized being close to multiple train lines and bus stops to get to school - it's been way easier to get around without a car because of it. The commute to UChicago is quite manageable (more than I initially expected it to be).

Great neighborhood just outside the craziness of the Loop. You're still very much "in the city" and it's easy to get to any corner of the city. A decent selection of bars and restaurants nearby, and very convenient to grocery store, Target, Roosevelt Collection, etc. Neighborhood is very pet and child friendly. Always feel safe, even late at night.

Being near the Roosevelt stop, I think the South Loop is great. It's up and coming, with bars and restaurants, the L right there, and right next to the museums/lakefront.
I would be more hesitant to live very south of Roosevelt, like 18th or so. Things become much quieter and it's a farther walk to things. Keep reading

I love South Loop. It's close enough to Hyde Park that you don't feel like you have a terrible commute to get to the law school, and it's in the city enough that you feel like you're in Chicago.
The streets are nice and wide. It's busy, but not too busy. There are grocery stores and a couple of decent food options - it's a perfect compromise for a law student that still wants to be in Chicago proper. Keep reading

It's a lot livelier than Hyde Park, and you are far more connected to the rest of Chicago. Printer's Row feels a lot safer too, and I do not feel as concerned when I walk around at night. South Loop is a great option because it's easy to get to both Hyde Park and downtown. There isn't much by way of restaurants/bars (at least in comparison to some of the other neighborhoods), but it's also a lot cheaper than downtown or the other neighborhoods west and north of downtown.

1000 South Clark
South Loop is often described as up and coming, and the 78, Chicago's newest neighborhood, will be constructed just across the street from Roosevelt Lofts.
Pros: Target is right next door. There's three grocery stores within a 10min walk (Trader Joes, Jewel) as well as the Roosevelt Station is a transit hub nearby. 15min away is the Museum Campus stop of the Metra Electric. In the mornings, the 192 Express from Roosevelt Station will take you to 59th/Kimbark right next to the Harper Center's rear entrance for a 25min overall commute. You can also take the Red Line to Grand/State and walk to Gleacher in 25min. You can get to your friends in the Loop in less than 20min. There's several good restaurants near Michigan (Flo & Santos, Low Country, Kurah, Giordano's) and good bars on Wabash (The Scout) or a few blocks north on Clark (Half Sour, Kacey's). There's a dog park a block to the north. Farther to the North, by Printer's Row, it's much nicer. There's a lot of new complexes closer to Michigan Ave. South Loop extends down to Cermak (2200 S block), but it's mostly condo and apartment complexes with relatively few businesses south of Roosevelt (1200 S block). Cons: As a major transit hub for Chicago's rougher South and West sides, Roosevelt Station is no stranger to police presence. The Roosevelt Collection Shops see frequent shoplifting by teenagers from outside the neighborhood and thus have a heavy security presence. There's also a dearth of mentally-ill homeless residents who occasionally harass or assault passers by. This situation has gotten significantly worse as the homeless camp near the 290 Expressway (near UIC) has grown. The occasional crime is often associated with the transit hub and folks from outside the neighborhood. This situation gets better the farther you are from Roosevelt Station. Keep reading

Getting to school with a car is great, because there is never traffic on Lake Shore Drive south of soldier field. Jewel, Trader Joes, banks, a movie theater, and some good restaurants/bars are around. However, I live near the Roosevelt L station though, which is the most active part of South Loop.

There's short walking distance access to the green line station, Jewel Osco, and a bunch of small restaurants/shops on Cermak road. It's next to Chinatown which means there will be plenty of small grocery stores and restaurants that offer more affordable prices than Jewel Osco.
There are always tourists and visitors walking around the area because of the proximity to the McCormick center. That makes the area feel very safe as there are usually always people walking around on Cermak rd. The area around the apartments looks a little sketchy at first, but I have been living here for 8 months and have had zero problems, I also never feel afraid to walk home at night from the station despite being a small woman. South Loop is quieter than the Loop, but you will get more space. Ideal for parents, people with partners that work remotely, or people looking for more space for their money. Outside of Bears games, has far fewer tourists to deal with than the Loop.
Across Michigan Ave from Grant Park. 10-minute walk from the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Soldier Field. Roosevelt station is very close by and incredibly convenient if you don't mind taking the train or buses, but it is a transit hub, so expect increased numbers and variety of people.
