Chapel Hill
Quiet Suburban Town
Chapel Hill has a suburban feel, with many single-family homes and quiet streets. The neighborhood is not particularly walkable, with few shops and restaurants within walking distance. The neighborhood is located near several major highways, including I-40 and US-15, making it easy to get around by car. Chapel Hill is a family-friendly neighborhood with several top-rated schools nearby, including Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School. While the neighborhood is not known for its nightlife or entertainment options, it is located near several other neighborhoods that offer more in the way of dining, shopping, and entertainment, including the nearby Franklin Street. Overall, Chapel Hill is a great place to live for those who value a quiet, suburban lifestyle with easy access to the city's many amenities.

Chapel Hill —
8.4/10 Rating
(based on 200 neighborhood reviews)
It's very quiet: mostly graduate students and some families. Very convenient for getting to McColl. It is tucked away in the corner of campus so if you want to walk anywhere, it takes about a mile to get into campus. I would recommend having a car for this neighborhood since there are no grocery stores within walking distance.

Baity Hill
The neighborhood consists entirely of UNC graduate students (business school, med school, law school, etc.). The Baity Hill apartments include Baity Hill Drive and Mason Farm Road. Baity Hill is slightly more family friendly (with playgrounds and a club house), whereas Mason Farm Road areas are better suited for singles or individuals looking for roommates.

Baity Hill
Baity Hill accommodates singles, couples, and families, and the neighborhood is very diverse. There are common areas to meet within the community, and you have great access to different areas of campus. The area is very safe at all hours, with minimal noise. Grocery stores are just a couple of miles away - you can get there by driving, convenient public transit, or the UNC shuttle service.

Neighborhood feels super safe. Little kids will like the playground on-site. Lots of friends for them to play with. Elementary school (Glenwood) is awesome, if not old. Plenty of community events to meet people and for kids to play. I like it here, and recommend it to most people.

The neighborhood is very convenient for business grad students, however, it is far from everything else. You need to get a car for everything, except going to school. It still compensates, given that uber is cheap in the region and the convenience to go to school is amazing.

We have about 10 first-year MBA students here which is a great number to carpool without it being too rowdy. The community is served by a free bus route that goes to campus and several more direct routes run across the street at the Friday Center.

There's a grocery store nearby, but there aren't really any restaurants or nightlife. The complex itself is very much geared towards graduate students. So if you're looking for a quiet neighborhood to study, this is a great place to be.

There is some noise from neighborhood entertainment that you can hear, nothing too loud. Not distracting to me and doesn't occur late at night. Minor pest problems are from roaches only, but we do have pest control come out and it's included in the fees we already pay, no extra cost. There is a tiny gym, about average to most complexes. I walk to the business building from the bus stop, as I take public transit since it is free, and it takes <40 to get to class (total).

I don't spend a lot of time in the immediate area, outside of the space at Alta Blu. There aren't a ton of food options, but there are nearby groceries (Trader Joes, Food Lion and Harris Teeter). Overall, it's really not bad. The biggest downside is ubering home from Franklin Street or McColl (if you're leaving at a different time than your carpool)

Close to a Harris Teeter grocery store, the Meadowmont shopping center, and some walking trails. They say it's walking distance to the bus (and it technically is) but it is not a paved or protected path so I often ended up driving to the park-and-ride lot when school was in-person. Berkshire Chapel Hill is next to the Chapel Hill Whole Foods and University Place. It is about a 12 minute drive to KFBS on 15-501 and you must Uber to any restaurants or bars in downtown Chapel Hill. The neighborhood is mostly student rentals, but it's very quiet. You don't see or hear huge parties. It's safe to walk around alone, but parts of the street aren't very well lit. Carrboro is really cool, if slightly offbeat place to be. Weaver St Market and a bevy of other restaurants/smaller places make it a good food hub. Lots of stores, gym in neighborhood, church, groceries--basically a little town. Con is that it almost feels a bit "Pleasantville." That said, the Walmart up the road (<2 min) is wonderful as is Fig & Honey and the huge Harris Teeter (<5 min away) in Chatham county. Families and children amidst Med School students and retirees. Great feeling, awesome convenience to UNC and downtown CH. Highly recommend.

The fire station is close by, so it unfortunately causes occasional noise when the fire engines use S. Elliott Road a throughway to get to Fordham Road.
