The Lower East Side is an amazing place to live. The neighborhood has so much history and is so close to many other great neighborhoods in NYC (China Town, SoHo, NoHo, West Village, Two Bridges, East Village, etc.) Not to mention, the last stop before Brooklyn is nearby to getting to the other borough is easy! There are a million places to go out and to eat, though everything is on the pricey side. It is a short walk to the main NYU campus (about 20 mins). They just opened up a Trader Joe's and a Target nearby that has made grocery shopping so easy!

I love the lower east side! So many great restaurants and activities and close to many of my friends. I found after 1L it was nice to have more distance from school and create a more separate life so if you don't mind commuting definitely worth it

One Manhattan Square
Two bridges is up and coming, like the east village 15 years ago. Lots of flavor, good bars and restaurants. Transit could be better connected, and parking is a nightmare but otherwise fine.

Plenty of grit and character in the Lower East Side - dive bars and cool graffiti on every corner. But there is also a large investment (and gentrification) in progress in the form of new luxury condo buildings, new shopping centers, etc., many of which will not be completed for a few years. On Clinton Street alone, you can find old school Dominican hair saloons, great new restaurants like Ivan Ramen and Yunnan BBQ, seven or so boutique coffee shops, and a luxury condo project.
Pros: walk to campus, great bars/restaurants/coffee shops
Cons: construction can be noisy, some streets feel a little rough at night as you go east of Clinton St, though I've never had any safety issues

a bit far from the train station (F) and it's not the most reliable train. Nice is that there is a citibike station near by. neighborhood is a bit sketchy but its walking distance to LES and Chinatown which, for the price, makes it a good deal
