I like the neighborhood and proximity to so many classmates and transit. There is, however, a lot of wealth disparity in the area that creates somewhat questionable situations (I.e, I got my catalytic converter stolen within the first few weeks of living here, before I could get a gated parking spot). With that being said, there are truly some great members of this neighborhood and a lot of times during the daylight where I feel very safe.

Triumph on the Park
The neighborhood is great because it is close to forest park and a lot of other students live in the area. However, it is not walking distance to many things besides Forest Park or the metro. On a nice day, it is a longer walking distance to the school, but that is still around a 45 minute walk. It is close to the school, which is great, but I would recommend thinking about your priorities in a neighborhood beyond proximity to the school, as most neighborhoods in the STL area will be less than a 20-minute drive from the school, and you can get a lot more bang for your buck in terms of amenities, square footage, yard or balcony space, and proximity to restaurants and coffee shops.

The Gates at Forest Park
It can get a little bit sketchy overnight. It isn't a bad neighborhood by any means, but gunshots are not super uncommon and there was one actual shooting in the year and a half I've been here as well as a few robberies. I love being close to the park and right in between CWE and the Loop. My apartment backs up to Forest Park Parkway so it can be noisy, but deeper in the neighborhood is very quiet. There are lots of fellow students.

Very pleasant, losts of students nearby. Could walk to the school if you were okay with a 30 minute walk, but definitely bikeable. Could also take a long walk to the central west end to restaurants. The streets are nice to walk around and feel safe. There is a slightly sketchy corner at the west end of pershing but so far has caused no trouble.

Great neighborhood, one of the safest (I think top 5 safest) in St Louis. Mack's Bar is a great place to hang out with other law students for happy hour, and the neighborhood is full of students and professionals who work at the hospital or university. The transit options are great whether you're going to campus, the loop, or central west end. Also it's great having Forest Park so close.

I really like my neighborhood. It is quiet and very dog friendly. People in the neighborhood are very friendly. Its also right across the street from Forest Park which I think is a huge plus. Also, like I mentioned it is pretty close to campus as well. There aren't many shops or restaurants within walking distance, which I don't mind because they are all very accessible (only a 8 minute drive or so to CWE and the Loop). I actually prefer this because it keeps the neighborhood much quieter.

The neighborhood is nice- there’s a cafe in the bottom of my building and a few shops/cafes in walking distance. Otherwise it’s pretty much just residential buildings/houses with Forest Park right across the street. Also very close to the loop (tons of restaurants/theater/bars)

Great street, so many of my young professional or graduate student friends moved to this street after living elsewhere in the central west end. Safe street, gets pretty busy but can always find parking. Super close to WashU, Barnes Jewish and the Cwe.

A ton of people live near me so I walk to people's houses all the time. I walk around the neighborhood or to the park and I have never felt unsafe walking around. I park right in front of my building so that is never an issue. It takes about 30 seconds to get from my car to my building door. There are also always people walking around the neighborhood and people walk their dogs around so its always nice to see dogs around. I have never personally felt unsafe at my apartment. I did come home once and someone had gotten carjacked about 15 minutes before but I don't think its very common here because this is a dead-end street. I will be renewing here because I love being within walking distance of the park and of my friends.

There is always a lot of people walking around near the metro stop and outside my building without an obvious purpose. I have been approached by two different people begging for money outside my building as well. Police presence indicates there may be issues with crime.

Debaliviere place is very nice. It has many apartment buildings with people in their mid-20s and doesn't feel like an old neighborhood. Further, there are a lot of dog walkers and joggers around, and the neighborhood has a handful of little restaurants and cafes. The one sore spot is, unfortunately, right across the street from Georgian Court. I believe this is a low income housing unit, and it is more problematic than any of the surrounding buildings. People frequently stand in the street and argue loudly with one another, honking and yelling is typical, and a handful of cars left parked on the street in front of the building have been attacked with rocks. This is really a dull spot in an otherwise great neighborhood.

Union blvd is a major thoroughfare for ambulances to go from Barnes Jewish hospital to anywhere north of Forest Park, so I hear 2-3 ambulances, 2 police vehicles, and a fire truck on a given weekend night and half that on the weekdays. The area is not the best to be walking around at night at, and my gf’s car was hit and ran in front of the building. Otherwise its by CWE, Clayton, the Loop, the highway, and right next to Forest Park, which is easily the highlight of the apartment building. It is 2 blocks away from the park, which is absolutely to die for, and very walkable during park operational hours, and is located near historical houses on Lindell, which are pretty to walk through. Really the only bad part about the area is that Union blvd is a larger thoroughfare than I’d like

Note that this review is being written during the coronavirus pandemic, so my comments about parking garage rates, traffic, and neighborhood activity may be inaccurate.
Debaliviere Place doesn't feel like a neighborhood as much as a street with apartment buildings. The best parts about this area are definitely the proximity to WashU campus and to Forest Park. However, there aren't many leisure or food options in the neighborhood; when we get take-out, we typically have to travel north past Delmar, east into the Central West End, or south toward Brentwood. All of these areas are close enough for a quick drive, but they probably aren't walkable. My individual apartment building feels quite safe, but I would be wary of walking around this neighborhood late at night. Police do patrol this area fairly frequently, but there isn't much lighting. This is generally a safe neighborhood during the day and there are always people walking dogs or running, but there is very little activity late at night. Keep reading

Pros: close to several classmates; close to Forest Park; close to campus; there are a couple of great restaurants in the neighborhood that are easy to walk to; in between CWE and the Loop; next to public transportation; very pretty neighborhood.
Cons: lots of construction at the moment; no grocery store, though one is being built; street parking for most buildings. Keep reading
Triumph on the Park
Pershing Ave itself is very well lit, there are a couple cute cafes and restaurants but nothing too loud or crazy, and the street is mostly apartments that house college students so it feels safe. I would feel uncomfortable walking alone very far off the street, but there are always young people walking dogs or going for runs nearby.

DeBaliviere place is a great neighborhood for WashU grad school students. It's very peaceful, full of pretty trees, and charming vintage apartment buildings nestled between blocks of stately mansions. There's always friendly neighbors out walking their dogs. And it's right next to Forest Park. Campus is about a mile away to the west, just a little too far to walk to class regularly, but the Metro station is within walking distance, taking you to campus in under a minute. To the east, the Central West End - full of bars and restaurants- is about a mile away as well, also easily accessible via the Metro. DeBaliviere Place offers the perfect balance: a peaceful neighborhood retreat where campus and bars/restaurants are still within easy reach.

This is a city. There is crime in our neighborhood for that reason. The street is quiet, but a main bus stop-hub is a few blocks away, and consequently there are a lot of people just hanging out/loitering at the edge of the neighborhood. There was a shooting a block from our apartment on the main road this semester at a mini-mart where someone was shot in the leg and taken by ambulance to the hospital. Both my car and my boyfriend's car were broken into at night when we forgot to lock them - people will just walk along and try opening the handles to see if they're locked. We do not keep anything of value in our cars.
All that said, I do not feel unsafe walking my dog or walking home from the metro or bus stops late at night alone. There are usually other people walking their dogs around and there are lots of students who live in this area. Keep reading

The neighborhood is great! It's well-maintained and very safe and friendly. Because of the pandemic we don't really go out and do anything in the neighborhood except exercise and go for walks, but we really like it. Would recommend to any incoming students.

The neighborhood is nice; there are some bars and restaurants that people seem to love. Public transportation is super close and accessible. The metro stop is always swarmed with loiterers. Have been offered drugs on my walk back. Other than that the metro is incredibly convenient and a money saver on gas an parking. Once you get away from the metro, the residential buildings are actually pretty and the trees and lawns are nice. Very few restaurants or fast food near by tho.
