This area of town is very safe and is full of undergrad students, postgrad students, younger people in their 20s working, and even families. It is central to lots of things with it being close to main campus, perkins/overpass, the interstate, and also it is within 15 minutes of downtown or government street and all that it has to offer.

I have felt completely safe and not dealt with bad traffic MOST of the time. I do not lose power during hurricanes either. That being said, we are kind of trapped on home game days without taking a long detour down River Rd. We have also had a shooting on the road in front of our complex. The rest of what you hear about being scared of Brightside (and Baton Rouge) is ridiculous, and mostly subconscious racism.

The experience of living in this neighborhood really depends on where you live. If you're in a gated, secured complex or neighborhoods such as Riverbend, I think it is a guaranteed great experience. There is some crime especially being close to campus, but it has never been a problem in my experience living here.

Summer Grove Condominiums
Hollydale is part of the "Gold Zone" in terms of safety, location, and general quality. My advice to prospective grad students is to consider jumping on any house or apartment that opens up in "the dales" / Southside. This would mean any house or apartment on Hollydale, Cedardale, Glendale, Cherrydale, Myrtledale. It's a small radius, but there are openings. The closer you are to that zone, the safer and more comfortable you'll likely be. Stanford Ave is fine too, but it could be stressful pulling out of your driveway.

Again, don't underestimate safety. If you have to pay 1000 (or thereabouts) instead of 650 for safety, I recommend it. Grad school is stressful enough. This especially true for international students with families. It often got hard for me to focus on work at the old place when I started worrying about my family's safety.
In case you're wondering, my old place was Tiger Pointe. When it was the Embassy, it was amazing. The owners even called it the Embassy because they wanted it to be a safe place for international students. By law when the original owner died, they were forced to sell in accordance with his will. Embassy Court next door is still run by Peggy and she is amazing. It's possible Tiger Pointe has cleaned up its act by now but I'd be careful. Tiger Pointe has gone through a couple of managers in less than a year. My friends called the cops to intervene on domestic violence in one of the other units as they were helping me move out. I paid over 2000 bucks to get my family out of that place when I got threatened by a drug dealer. Again, it might be better now but if they are not doing credit checks then I'd look elsewhere first. I think they kicked the drug dealer out by the way. I kind of hope LSU buys the place since it's right next to the preschool. The Embassy Court is still good. Peggy will give you an honest answer about how safe the area is at night. The Embassy Court is also affordable. My current location is great. The Hollydale apartments across the street are good too. They don't have a gate but the tenants are friendly. The Hollydale Condos are better for families. If I was single and needed a place right away, I'd probably go for the Nicholson Gateway apartments. It's pricy but unfortunately you have to pay for safety.

The neighborhood is mostly nice. Brightside can be a busy street, but most of the units are away from the road, so I don't get a lot of noise. I've never felt unsafe driving in my area at night, and there are many people that run and walk the neighborhood during the day.

It’s next to sprouts (like Whole Foods) and next to a lot of nice places along Perkins. It’s about a 5 minute drive from Perkins Rowe (shopping, best nearby movie theater) and about 10 from the mall of Louisiana. In the other direction, you’re only about 10 minutes from LSU campus. Whatever food or common activity you’re looking for, you should be able to find it within 15 minutes of here. It generally seems safe since it is a gated apartment complex, frequently with a police car out front.

I don't move around the neighborhood much. I think it's average. Very close to school and lies along the Tiger trail. A lot of students live here and there are between 2-4 Tiger trail buses along the route depending on the time of the year compared to 1 Tiger trail bus on other routes. There's also the Baton Rouge CATS public transport bus which doesn't go to LSU but can help you get around town free with your student ID. It's unusually noisy on weekends since there are around 4 bars which a lot of students frequent but overall it's fair. I like the nightlife, so I don't have too much of a problem with the noise.

I am a classical pianist, so I rented a piano to practice during the allowed time.
The neighbor that leaves below my apartment threatened me and my husband, came to our place twice with violent gestures, shouting, screaming, damaging our door. Nevertheless, the manager said he could not do anything to this man.

They said that I could call the police, period.

This contempt is repulsive.

It is very close to LSU campus. 10 min walk to Student Union. It is convenient if your department is in the upper half of the campus. There are bars, restaurants and churches nearby. It is near a running track and the lake. You will enjoy the neighborhood if you do not go out after 9 pm (I mean walking and alone, I did not encounter because I did not but my friends told me to be careful so I'm passing it without validation).

The roads are terrible and traffic is worse.
There is almost nothing to do here outside except hunt and fish.
A couple nights a week you're going to wake up to someone punching their dog or parked outside your window blasting music.
Everything floods here. Don't ever get a ground-level apartment.

Southdowns is great for young professionals. Seems safe enough but still be vigilant. Take care to watch out when you are on walks because some people speed through these neighborhood roads without caution. Overall it is a convenient and pretty place to live. I can't speak for the price of renting anywhere other than my unit, but what I pay seems reasonable for what is included.

The area is fairly decent. The fire station is about 2 minutes away. There are some car break ins occasionally, but that’s happened at every complex I’ve lived at. The complex is gated, so there aren’t many issues, but the surrounding area is iffy. It’s not too far from TigerLand.

I'm not entirely sure what this neighborhood is called; there is a sign on Perkins Road by the Trader Joe's that says something like "Historic Market District", Hinge calls it "Highland/Perkins", but most people just describe it as "by the I-10 overpass", which is most accurate. The neighborhood is safe, friendly, and clean; I've had no issues, though I think I heard a gunshot once and a man was murdered in the Trader Joe's parking lot in the past year. It's a nice mix of families and young professionals with a wide range of SESes within a short distance - you get a little bit of everything over here, but it leans on the "gentrified" side, for better or for worse. I love how walkable the neighborhood is - close to the lakes or even just around the streets and close to bars, restaurants, and grocery stores. The amount of neighborhood drama has been minimal and expected; nothing that has even remotely impacted my experience living here. I have been incredibly impressed by how friendly my neighbors are - inviting each other over for support during the freeze in January, watching each other's pets, communal brunches, sharing plant cuttings; the works. I would highly recommend living here if you are a friendly, prosocial, respectful person.

Neighbors are quiet/ respectful but you can have a few units with people who like to entertain. I have lived in the neighborhood since 2020 and there has only every been ONE incident where a friend left their car unlocked and had their headphones/ chargers taken (the thief left her booksac/ laptop alone). You'll need to have a car, but each unit has a carport. Some people will bike to the games/ school via the levee path.

Location-wise, Park Place is in the perfect spot. I am only a few minutes from the law school by car. It is tough on game days. I try not to leave my apartment those days. Traffic can get backed up on regular days as well. But aside from home game weekends, it's doable. It doesn't ever make me late for school or anything.

My local apartment neighborhood is safe and good. There are only a few events that bring anyone together during the semester. They do also have printing and computers for use. I appreciate that, the pool, the small gym, and the new grilling area outside.

It is near the a rougher side of town, so sometimes you should be cautious. For instances, there have been several shootings and carjackings that have happened down the street on Aster per LSU PD alerts.

The District isn't really located in a neighborhood, it's kind of standing on it's own on that stretch of Perkins. But it's very close to a lot of stuff! Anything on Perkins is easy to access, Sprouts is just a block down, LSU is about 15 minutes away, and Perkins Rowe and Bluebonnet Mall are also very close and easy to get to.

This apartment is right on the edge of a moderately dangerous neighborhood and much safer LSU campus. The fence of the apartment straddles LSU property line at Nicholson Gateway apartments and railroad track. This is why I give it a middle score. I felt safe going to the river through more circuitous path through Gateway student parking lot, not so much going back way across tracks and through neighborhood.

I live within walking distance of LSU campus so it's perfect for students. The distance is especially great for football season so I don't have to worry about parking. I also live right next to the lakes which I enjoy walking around for exercise. There are also multiple restaurants, bars, and coffee shops so dinner is never a problem.

The unit is borderline affordable. The parking lot is not gated, but there is always plenty of parking available and the landscaping is nice and clean. Surrounding the complex is a 3-4 other small to medium housing complexes (half of which are gated) and a shopping center and other restaurants. I often go walking around the complex and the surrounding neighborhood seems safe. There is also a bike path across the street and Tiger Trail stop at the complex next door. The road and entrance to the complex was recently paved. One mile away is Tigerland, which is unsafe.

I do not know the neighborhood name nor it’s rating. But we have had multiple times shootings at the apartments either in the air and definitely one murder. We have had two guys Roaming the inside of the complex with guns and following girls and knocking on their doors. Elevator controls ripped out for no reason. Pet feces in walkways elevators stairways. There is major issues with South apartments next door and if you’re moving in she blocks the drive-through were people have problems trying to get through and move in.

Lark Baton Rouge
The northside of campus definitely borders a lower income neighborhood of Baton Rouge. There are homeless people and folks waiting for the bus. If you haven't grown up in similar areas then it can feel a bit scary if you walk past Aster St. Mind your prejudices and be respectful. You're probably more likely to get mugged or in a fight in Tiger Town.

There are all kinds of good food & restaurants, a CVS, a cute thrift store, live music venue (when COVID is over) and LSU campus all within walking distance or <5 min drive. As a small 5' 3" white passing female I have walked home plenty of times, even past midnight, and never felt threatened (maybe 1 or 2 cat calls from the gas station in my 2 years of living in this area, you're more likely to be asked for some change and they've never been aggressive with me if I tell them I don't have any cash). Use your common sense, be respectful, and maybe avoid strolling past W. Roosevelt and you'll be safe.

I love that you avoid the traffic and congestion of the south side of campus and I think you get a more local experience with options like Chimes, University Seafood, Triplets Blue Store, Pandan Teahouse, City Slice, and Valley Wings instead of Chick fil a, Taco Bell, Sonic, etc. It is also closer to the highway, 15min from the airport, and less than a mile from the university lakes!

TL;DR -
Basically, be respectful, mind your prejudices, use your common sense, and you'll be safe. The locals are lower income folks living their lives, not aggressive gang members out for blood. Love that its walking distance to LSU campus, food, gas station, & CVS. Has more local options and less traffic, close to highway, airport, and university lakes.

The lakes are great for exercise and de-stressing. Its beautiful and provides fresh air (away from the interstate).
The restaurants around are some of the best in town. The original Cane's, Zero Degrees, Louie's, Lit Pizza, the list goes on.

It does get crazy during football season. You basically have to stay inside on game days because they shut down E. State.
