You get what you pay for

We have 3 people in the apartment, so we are only paying about $566 each per month with utilities and parking in the garage included. So it is fairly cheap. However, the customer service is pretty terrible. They are rarely in the office to discuss any problems and are not nice about most things. They take forever to fix any work orders you submit unless they are really high priority. They will also show up at the door without warning that they are coming at a certain time/day. The elevator inspection has been expired since 2015 (it's 2017...) We've complained about these things but nothing seems to happen. We had cockroaches but only briefly and they took care of them. They brag about their rooftop deck when you're touring but you can't get up there without a key that they hold onto and they are never there to get the key from them. They also make you give them your ID and if they leave for the day and you still have the key, you can't get your ID back (sometimes for the whole weekend). They told my roommate she was paying a certain price for parking and had her sign for a different price (which unfortunately she didn't notice) so don't trust them and be careful! Overall, it's cheap, lots of space/storage for the price, nice views from the higher floors but terrible company. We're staying for a 2nd year only because of laziness not wanting to move our stuff.

Getting around Monroe Ward

Monroe Ward Reviews

6 reviews
Some parts may seem sketchy, but not as much as if you further downtown. It is a very becoming place, and there are lots of young people living around. Plus, it is still in the VCU vicinity, and thus it policed by their police, not only Richmond police. There is a public library around the corner; amazing restaurant, and a famous historical inn.
It is close/basically on VCU campus so those areas aren't too unsafe. However, certain areas are very sketchy. Right behind our apartment feels very unsafe. Lots of restaurants nearby on Broad St.
I think I technically live in Downtown and not Monroe Ward, but it's fine and safe either way.
It's kind of on the border with downtown; but we are surrounded by growing trendy restaraunt scene, city library, and classy Franklin street neighborhood (VCU area with its security). Thus, although there are homeless people walking around, generally, I don't feel unsafe walking by myself in the evening. In short, it's not as dangerous as people may think, but of course it is not perfect.
This isn't the safest of neighborhoods, but it s very conveniently located close to campus and has a bunch of good restaurants, bars and public transit in the vicinity!
Love it! There is a lot to do there.
