Great location and unit layout, but there are some drawbacks

The location is great - it's within walking distance to lots of places downtown. The apartment layouts are nice, and everything is decently sized. The old hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, and wooden beams are key features that distinguish the apartment - if you like the renovated warehouse feel, this apartment won't disappoint you. There are dishwashers and washers/dryers in each unit, which isn't always the case in Richmond apartments. Cable, internet, utilities, and electric are all included, so you only have to pay one bill each month. I really do like my apartment. Generally, my experience has been positive.

However, there are some issues. Not all of the apartments in the building have the same features, which can be really annoying if you have one of the apartments that doesn't have the most recent updates (stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, etc.). Management isn't able to tell you which units have what features either, as they don't know. Rent is pretty expensive if your unit doesn't have those updates, but seems relatively reasonable if you do have them.

Parking can be easy if you lease a spot in a nearby lot - otherwise you'll be relying on street parking. Parking is not included in the price of rent though. You'll have to tack on an extra $70-$100 per month to park, depending on which lot you're in.

It can also be very noisy in the apartment due to the windows being so thin while being in a popular area of town. This is more the case on weekends during warmer months than any other time. Street drummers like to play on the corner outside the building too, which can get old pretty fast. (They are talented though, so that's positive.)

I've also had quite a few issues with the timeliness of responses to service requests. Sometimes management will address an issue within 24 hours, sometimes they won't fix something for several weeks.

Shockoe Cary

We recently moved in to the apartment this month, and so far we really enjoy it! I feel that it is a very reasonable price for the space and amenities we have. Its nice only having to worry about one bill. The only thing I would enjoy more is it if had more closets for storage space, but other than that I feel it is very spacious.

Getting around Shockoe Bottom

Shockoe Bottom Reviews

9 reviews
Shockoe Bottom has a decent restaurant/bar scene as well as some clubs. It's close to downtown so if you're working there it's a good option. Rent is getting steeper as more investment is made in the surrounding communities so that's worth watching. There's only one (overpriced) grocery store nearby and public transportation leaves a lot to be desired but that's supposedly changing. The area has a ton of character and the flip side to more investment in the area is greater amenities.
I don't venture out much because of COVID, but I know there's a bookstore nearby and some local restaurants (it's also right across the street from a Buffalo Wild Wings). I think I'll enjoy living in downtown a lot more when it's safe to go to the bars and stuff again.
It artsy
Near a lot of restaurants, bars, and green space. Good for young professionals.
Good.
The neighborhood is close to the medical campus for VCU which is great for my roommate being a dental student. one block from a farm fresh and numerous little restaurants within walking distance. One con is the train down there is loud but I have gotten used to it and it doesnt wake me up.
Lots of young people around. bars/restaurants/parks nearby
Parking is awful, but the cultural/social/restaurant/bar and club scene is amazing.
