Great Value

We couldn't beat the price here at Van Pelt on the Square. We pay 2k a month for a 2/1 apt with about 750 sq ft. Management is super responsive and we love having a large shared courtyard. Since it isn't a high rise building there aren't many extra amenities but we do enjoy having all the basics. Washer/dryer, window ac units, bike storage etc.

Van Pelt on the Square

Very secure, with updated interiors. New management thats very responsive to emails and texts. 15-20 minute walk from the hospital and 10 minute walk to Rittenhouse Square. Apartment is small, minimal storage.

Great location, price and building - terrible property manager

I live in a courtyard brownstone complex which has a great outdoor communal space with BBQs and a seating area. The apartments are a good size with lots of natural light and are in a fantastic location a little south of Rittenhouse (which is much quieter, prettier and residential). The big downside to the apartment is the property manager is terrible and you have to ask him a million times to get anything done. If you can deal with that, its a fantastic place to live and its at least $400-500 cheaper than what classmates pay to live right next to Rittenhouse Square.

Bad management, but great apartment!

My wife and I love this apartment. It's large and cheap. It has a fireplace. We overlook a courtyard. We have a courtyard, where we hang out and have barbecues. It's a really nice apartment.

The landlord sucks and is unresponsive. I don't trust him at all. But that's the only downside. This is a really great place to live, great location, etc., and value for money.

No amenities, but nice, old, charming building, if you're looking for that kind of thing.

Fitler Square is really cute and homey. It's around a lot of other medical students, so it's a good social area and has an easy commute to school. It's also great if you like running because it's right off the trail on the river. Food is good but a bit homogenous (compared to West Philly especially.
Locust and spruce feel a lot safer than market or chestnut at night. Very residential streets with beautiful brownstones. Also close to dog park and the river walkway. About 10min walk from the popular buildings and 25min walk to huntsman
good place for people new to the city! close to both Penn and a lot of stuff downtown. I never lived in Philly beforehand, and definitely recommend this location
Love the neighborhood! If you're interested in being close to the center of the city and being able to actively explore Philly (for a not extreme price) it was great! Also was easy to get to my school - University of Pennsylvania. 15-20 mins to get to school by transit; 30 mins walking.

That being said I did notice that most students lived on the side of the school!
The beautiful tree-filled neighborhood is full of families, dogs, and students - it is safe, full of great restaurants, and boasts an equally quick walk to both University City and downtown attractions. The immediate access to the Schuylkill River Trail also can't be beat. While we lack apartment amenities, we love living in a historical brownstone that has charm and character. This is an area where you can live as a student and stay for another 20 years after that.
Great neighborhood, though expensive for Philly. If you're a Penn grad student who wants to be near campus but not on campus, it's ideal for distance from school and the Rittenhouse area. Lots of parks and residents are friendly.
There are residents without housing in the neighborhood. They're good people and new residents should be respectful of them and their belongings.
The neighborhood is very residential. Not a ton of bars/restaurants which can be annoying if you just want to pick up food after a busy day, but it's right near the park and Skukyhill river trail which is great for exercising and getting outdoors. Close to Trader Joe's and South Street market which is convenient
Center City is a fantastic area. I live on the northern side of it, which is the more financial/industrial/apartment building side. I live 2 blocks from a busy Trader Joe's and inches away from tons of great restaurants, corner stores, and shops. It's close to Rittenhouse Square, a swanky square block with a tiny park in the middle, as well as the Schuylkill River trail (great for running and biking) and the Art Museum area. Multiple major bus lines slice through this neighborhood, making it quite easy to get anywhere when you don't want to walk or bike.
