Living at Onyx on First and attending GW Nursing

Everyone that works here is nice. It's convenient to get to MedStar WHC. The drive to school takes a while, but it's a pretty drive and I enjoy it. This is a small apartment with no balcony, but we do have a washer and dryer in the apartment, which is nice. I expected it to be small, especially with three people living in a one bedroom, so that's ok. Also, you can barely ever hear the neighbors. It's incredible. The walls are very thick.

Great staff, great location

I have lived here for 2 years now, and the location and staff are unbeatable. The price is a little steep for the square footage and space, but the neighborhood is great. The concierge team is what makes this apartment stand out from others! Love it.

It's Been Ok

My experience at the Onyx on First has been okay. The apartment doors are not really doors, but sliders. Great value and great staff. I have enjoyed having such a convenient gym and a metro right next to my location. It is also close to both Navy Yard restaurants and Barracks Row.

Onyx on First

Great location near Capitol Hill and the booming Navy Yard/Waterfront community. Sits right next to the Navy Yard-Ballpark metro station and several bus stops, including the DC Circulator are right out front of the building.

Rent prices are quite volatile in the building and identical units can be priced wildly apart from each other for seemingly no reason. The Residents I have met have been quite friendly and pleasant, however there seems to be a large contingent of (typical) inconsiderate apartment dwellers here too. Door slamming at all hours of the day and night is loud enough to wake the dead in this building. There's also an abundance of dogs in the building and that leads to some noise issues with barking too.

The amenities are few and far between compared to the newer buildings going up in the area. The rooftop pool is more like a puddle and the gym is extremely small. However, this means an amenity fee that is only charged one-time no matter how long you live in the building versus the exorbitant annual amenity fees charged at other properties.

For the price paid, I would expect more but this is DC and you barely get what you pay (a lot) for.

Onyx Review

It's a safe apartment with good appliances and design. It's a little small and dark both in the actual apartment and in the hallways. This contrasts with the main lobby area which is bright and pretty. I have issues with the smoke alarm occassionally and its not a great closet but overall I like it.

Love the Onyx on First!

I love living at the Onyx! Management is very friendly and helpful, they welcomed my dog, garage parking is affordable, we are a 2 minute walk from the Navy Yard metro station, just 2 blocks from Nationals Park, just a few blocks from Harris Teeter... I love the location because it's not too crazy but still has plenty going on, and it's easy to access other parts of DC due to the proximity of the metro.

Growing area but sometimes difficult to get to Georgetown.

We have lived here for two years and love the management and building! Great location too - SE is growing. However, it can be a difficult location to live if you are commuting to Georgetown (metro-accessible but not easy). There is parking for an extra fee!

We've lived in multiple buildings in this neighborhood over the past few years and we absolutely love it. The gorgeous waterfront is a few minutes from any building in the neighborhood and we are steadily getting new restaurants and finally the advent of fast-casual restaurants too. There are still areas of the neighborhood that are less safe, but my first apartment was squarely within the less-than-safe part, and there were never any incidents. There is a fair amount of construction to contend with, but it is merely indicative of how quickly this neighborhood is booming. The prices are unlikely to stay this low for long; we are already seeing a steady jump in pricing in all the surrounding buildings.
I love living in Navy Yard!! I am a ten minute walk to work and five minutes from two metro stops. There is a Harris Teeter within easy walking distance and a Whole Foods on the way. The area down on the water in Yards park is beautiful and has a great variety of restaurants, bars and necessities (gym/salon etc.) As a Nats fan, being steps from the ballpark is also a HUGE plus. The only con right now is all of the construction going on, but within the next year it will just mean more exciting things for the area so it's not all that bad.
The neighborhood is largely under construction but in ten years or so it will be awesome. In the meantime, there are a lot of great restaurants, the waterfront, and the baseball stadium.
The areas is constantly changing with new restaurants and bars. During the summer the the Yards Park is one of the most beautiful and popular parks int he city!
Looking forward to more grocery stores and shops opening, but I like the quiet of the neighborhood. Easy walk to the water and the Capitol.
I love walking around this neighborhood because it is rather quiet and residential. There are many parks nearby.
The neighborhood has been fantastic. Tons of construction of new restaurants and retail. Great to explore.
Lots of cool bars and restaurants nearby and it's always so nice in the spring and summer having the ballpark right there. Only downside is that it seems like nobody cares to pick up after their dogs - there is feces ALL OVER the sidewalks.
While the neighborhood feels safer than where I used to live in Chinatown, the Riverfront area has increasingly felt less and less safe with more crime happening in the area.
