it's fine
It's *fine*, with nothing major to complain about and nothing major to boast about either. They have a maintenance crew who are fast, but sloppy. Their elevators break often, but most of the time most of them are working so it's usually not an issue. Their package room is fully automated, and we've not had issues with package theft. We have a spot in the parking lot ($100/month), and haven't had issues with break-ins either. We did have a cockroach problem, but they were quick in responding and had pest-control treat our apartment the same week.
They allow pets (for an extra fee), we get plenty of sunlight, it's a 5 minute walk from the trolley station, and 15 minute walk from the Gaslamp district.
But each year we have to play the game of chicken with the leasing office where they give an outrageous new rent, we threaten to move out, and then they lower it to a reasonable amount.
Move here if you can't find anywhere else that you're happy with.

Vantage Pointe
Second year living here. They have raised our rent by 10% each year so with our lease coming to an end this summer we have decided to relocate elsewhere. It's good to see that they are renovating all units in addition to common spaces but the increase is hard for us to justify. There are alot of transient people always in the perimeter of the building which makes us feel unsafe for late night walks, etc.

Downtown Living
Dog friendly apartment complex with a gym and close to the trolley stop. Commute to UCSD is ~50- 60 mins and cost is too high for graduate students as UCSD does not pay a proper living wage. UCSD has only given a 10% raise over 5+ years, I'm only living here as my roommate is able to pay literally DOUBLE the amount I pay (~I pay only 33% of total cost).

High rent and reaks of dog urine
If you can afford the steep rent + utilities + $100/m for parking, and never leave your apartment, it's fine.
Moving in was mostly fine, and maintenance is quick, even if it's not very good. The unit itself is quite nice, with a dishwasher, decent fridge and glasstop electric stove. There's also a really good and powerful AC system controlled by a smart home device. Finally, it's a 5 minute walk from the trolley station and walking distance to the Gaslamp district.
However, it takes ~40 minutes to get to campus by trolley, so account for ~2 hours total of commute each day, and don't rely on being able to work on the trolley, though it's usually possible. Also the actual moving in can be a bit of a hassle since you are required to reserve a loading dock space and elevator and can use it for 2 hours at most. Finally, the downstairs area and the entire neighborhood reeks of dog urine and you can usually find feces on sidewalks. A lot of sidewalks are also blocked by tents for unhoused people, so it's not really walkable. If you only ever drive to places you won't care about this, but if you like going out for walks, it's quite bleak.
Lastly, the closest grocery store is a 15 minute walk away, and the next closest stores are a 10 minute drive / 25 minute bus ride. So again having a car is not strictly necessary, but really recommended.

good in general, reasonably priced given the amenities and rental hikes in San Diego
