Location is amazing but apartments are very old.
I don't have a washer/dryer or a dishwasher. Maintenance can take a while but with a base rent of about $950 for a 2B1B, that's pretty good overall. Utilities are flat rate of $150/month.

Very cute, very safe, old-fashioned charm
I love my apartment. You can't beat the location. Right off English Village in Mountain Brook, we are within walking distance to the zoo, the botanical gardens, restaurants, ice cream, and a local bakery. It's incredibly safe, and I never feel nervous coming home late at night. It's less than 10 minutes from campus and an easy commute. The apartments are old (the complex was built in the 1930s); however the vintage charm is adorable and it's very functional. Our kitchen appliances work great and even the radiator and window units keep us comfortable in both winter and summer. Despite having a smaller unit (700 sq feet) it still feels spacious for 2 people and we have huge windows in every room. We live on the 2nd (top) floor and only have 3 others on our breezeway, so we get a smaller feeling to our community (less of a huge complex vibe). We also never have noise issues, the walls are thick.
Some drawbacks include the following. It's older, so no granite countertops or fancy appliances or a dishwasher (unless you pay extra to have one hooked up). Most units do NOT have in-unit washer-dryers. There is a community laundry facility, but it's $2 per load (wash and dry). If you have family in the area that can help you out like we do (or very kind friends), it's not an issue.
Additionally, the complex is really diverse. There are some undergrads, professional students, lots of new grads with jobs in health care, and some small families. Overall, wherever you are in life, you'll fit in.

Very cute, very safe, old-fashioned charm
The Redmont Gardens Apartments are very unique! They were built in the 30s but the apartments are beautiful. I live in a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom and the rooms with the exception of the bathroom are very spacious. Our closets are also a great size, though each apartment is different so that might not always be the case. The only cons are there is no dishwasher (though for extra you can get a portable hook-up) and many apartments do not have a washer/dryer hook-up. There is on-site laundry but we save money and do laundry with family. Overall, these have been non-issues - we were worried about not having a dishwasher, but handwashing hasn't been a problem. The English village area is very cute and safe. There's an adorable bakery nearby and some very nice restaurants and shopping. Most tenants are either young professionals and there are some college students and a few families.
