We lived at the Radcliffe property for a year. The property is not well taken care of. We were promised landscaping, which ended up being a guy with a weed whacker in a trailer. He would come by and trim the weeds, we had almost no grass, and left the bushes and plants overgrown. Landlord insists on being paid via check every month mailed to him bc he doesn’t do online payments and lives in Florence. And when my bank mistakenly flagged a check, he demanded we pay his bank fine, even though he told us a different amount than was in the lease in case of this incident. My bank advised me to not pay it because they sent an apology letter to his bank and his bank ended up reversing the fine, but he still demanded we pay it. We didn’t, but it took a long fight. The bathrooms had mold and were absolutely disgusting. The landlord insisted that we keep one of the bathroom fans on all the time because of the latex paint he applied. Some floor joists in the downstairs bedroom were failing and created a soft spot in the floor. Windows didn’t close properly, we had to buy a new latch for the storm door. And when a genuine plumbing issue came up, the landlord insisted that WE put something down the drain and we had to pay for the plumber to come out. We went back and forth on how toilet paper shouldn’t plug up a drain, and in the end we just split the charge and wrote it off as another reason to move out. Fridge door shelving was broken when we moved in. Any problems we had, he sent his dad to come look at because he lives two hours away. When we complained of a wasps nest in the backyard, his dad sprayed some Raid in a plant and left the can with us and walked away. Trash in the backyard when we moved in, including spare window screens. And when we went to move out, he told us he was going to have a professional cleaner come to the property, but told us the day AFTER she was supposed to come that she didn’t come because she had a shoulder surgery and she’d be by next week, would we mind cleaning for the new tenants? And the key handoff went terribly. He told us he would be out of the state the weekend our lease ended, and would we be able to pass the keys off early? I said yes if we get a prorated deduction of our rent, then he said no actually you just hand them off to the tenants yourself. So my roommates and I had to wait around for the new tenants to show up and hand them the keys. He threatened to withhold our security deposit because one bathroom that one roommate used herself was a mess even though he said he was going to send his cleaner over. We did all the work for him, new tenants say cleaner never showed up. Would never recommend renting from this man. Only perk was location and price.
