Very nice, cozy and CHEAP apartment,
The rent is below the market average since Hillcrest Apartments is located 20-25 minute walk away for the Notre Dame campus. However, the walk is nice and safe with cozy neighborhoods on the way.

Great Apartments
Nice apartments at an extremely low price (compared to similar housing in the area).

Simple Cheap and Close
Hillcrest Apartments are simple, cheap, and close to campus. They are mostly non-students, working folks and older people. It is very quiet. There is on-site laundry and parking. Things are not new by any stretch of the imagination but everything is well maintained. I enjoyed the year I lived in my studio apartment before I came back to campus to be an AR. I believe there is often a waiting list because the rent is so affordable and you don't feel like you have to compromise safety, either based on location or facilities. If I did not choose to be an AR, I would have happily stayed there.
What makes Hillcrest unique, aside from being such a good deal, is that you feel like you can escape the law school environment. Many other apartments are filled with law students so it feels like class follows you everywhere. This has the benefit of building friendships like an undergrad dorm but I found that I appreciated being able to separate myself from the chaos at the end of every day.

The perfect choice
Amazing price, great location, easy parking right outside your door. A lovely walk down Pokagon to the Law School, about 15 - 20 minutes. And you can walk to downtown South Bend in about the same amount of time. Maintenance needs are always met within 24 hours.
Downsides: electric bill can be high in the winter because ($100+), but is cheap the rest of the year. Laundry is in a room downstairs, not in unit. The units are also not furnished. This was a benefit for me since I arrived in South Bend with lots of furniture I already love.
