Violet on Virgil is good value for the cost

Good amenities and location for the cost. It's rent controlled. There's a gym, pool, hot tub, grills, and community center in the building. The staff are very nice. There's also a grocery store a few blocks away. Parking is included and in a garage. You can get a tandem spot too. The building is very pet friendly. I like that my living room is vinyl flooring and my bed room is carpet, so I can keep my pet out of the bedroom. Almost all of the units also have a balcony, which is amazing. I can see the Hollywood sign from the sidewalk outside the building. It's about a 15 minute walk from the metro red line (Beverly stop) and a ten minute walk to Vermont and 3rd, where you can catch the 204 or 754 bus straight to USC's campus. I recommend getting a student semester transit pass through USC.

Getting around Westlake

Close enough to walk downtown, but across the 110 bridge so it doesn't get as much traffic congestion
Access to DTLA is great, very close to Fig at 7th and other fun spots downtown. Apartment is on the border of DTLA and Westlake. Have seen a couple of cars, street parked on Garland, that have had their windows smashed in. Apartment is also very close to several houseless encampments. Despite its extremely close proximity to LLS, I choose to drive to campus because I do not feel safe walking as a woman, alone.
This is not a good neighborhood, but I am living here because it is close to school. There are homeless people everywhere, and I do not feel safe walking around. The upside is that there have been many bars and restaurants opening up in the area, so it's making it a bit nicer.
You need to know DTLA well, to know which parts are safe and which are not. This is a few blocks into the 'safe zone'. Don't go west from Bixel and east of hill street.
It is 5 mins walk away from downtown and the path is rather safe.
The neighborhood is not the greatest, but it's also not the worst. I feel safe walking to and from class, but would probably stay in groups around nighttime. I have gone out at night several times on my own with no issues, but I still wouldn't recommend it.
Neighborhood is essentially downtown LA one direction and Westlake the other. I do not venture into Westlake at all so it is hard for me to answer, whenever I walk anywhere it is toward downtown LA. I did walk to campus to begin the year but the walk in between the apartment and campus is a little sketchy, particularly when you get closer to Loyola.
Close to DTLA without the traffic. Close to the red line and major bus lines. not that many restaurants though in our area.
