Love It, for Now
I love my apartment. Here are a few reasons why: hardwood floors in the living room and bedrooms, decorative fireplace, big windows in the living room that frames a big lovely tree, cat friendly, on-site laundry, skylight in the bathroom, updated kitchen and bathroom materials and appliances, rooms are modestly well-sized, and I didn't have to pay a security deposit. (I may regret the latter point later, but I'm not sure.) I love the neighborhood and although I have a 60 minute commute, including a 15 min walk to the blue line, that's OK with me. I have an XSport membership and a facility is a mere 10 minute walk--if that--away. The Chicago Public Library Mayfair Branch is also a 10 minute walk. And the nearby food options are delicious: Hala In, Mini Palapita, Sano's Pizzeria, and Senor Pan Cafe.
Several aspects I do not like about my apartment: I have to go outside and down stairs to get to the laundry room, the tile grout for the hallway and kitchen is breaking apart piece by piece, the shower pressure sucks, the toilet water pressure sucks so clogs happen often, the layout means my AC unit doesn't cool more than the living room, and there's little designated storage space. The bigger bedroom has a decently sized closet, enough for some clothes and personal items, while the smaller bedroom has a small walk-in, but neither is great for the storage necessary for that which would go in a pantry. Even more, a pantry-like closet in the kitchen houses the HVAC, and even though I've fit a short shelf in there, management tells me it's a possible safety issue, so there goes that. Speaking of management, they could be quicker at replying to my maintenance requests. Recently, in fact, they repeatedly marked my requests as completed without doing anything or even notifying me whether they'd be addressed soon.
All these complaints aside, this apartment is the right fit for me and my roommate at this time.
