Not Far from Howard

This is not a luxury apartment. The best thing about it is that it is not too far from colleges. Have had to deal with insects at times because of forest close by the apartments

Living at The Cloisters for 4 years now

I am about to start my 4th year lease with The Cloisters. It's convenient because it's a little shy of a mile from Howard. I could walk to campus in 20-30 mins if I wanted to. 1 car per unit may park for free. Add another car for $150 per month. Max 2 cars per unit. Close to a bus stop, but the route isn't convenient to Howard. Closest metro stop is Brookland-CUA, about a 15-25 minute walk. Leasing office staff isn't great and not always friendly or knowledgeable. Maintenance staff don't always know what they're doing either. Pets are allowed with a pet fee and there is a small pet area. The gym is super small with only 2 tread mills, 2 bikes, and a very limited weight rack. Some buildings have rodent problems that the leasing office pretends to address. The rent here is cheap for being located in DC and next to 3 universities (Catholic, Trinity, Howard). It's also very close to 3 hospitals so you will hear the ambulance often. In the 3 years that I have been here, there have been 2 or 3 instances of vehicle vandalism. Overall not a horrible place to live, but not the best either. I stay for the convenience, the friends (a lot of Howard Pharmacy students live here), and I'm too lazy to move elsewhere.

It'll Be a Roof Over Your Head, Praise Jesus

The Cloisters hasn't exactly been the most ideal living situation. We just had 3 mice in our apartment, which have since been taken care of. The apartment complex has a large amount of insects on the property. Some of these insects have on a few occasions made their way into our home, and they're VERY large (beetles, spider centipedes, crickets). When they do, they're half-dead so they're easy to take care of, but we're unsure as to how they're getting in our apartment. We never use our balcony because there are so many bugs outside, especially during the spring/summer. Management is responsive to our problems, but seems to be unable to fix them. We just had some work done on the apartment to seal things up a little bit better, but we'll see how that helps.

A few of our other colleagues that live here seem to not be experiencing the same problems we are, so it may just be our apartment.

There's no pool. The gym is small (2 treadmills, 2 bikes, weights, and some other equipment) but it's fine for what I do on a daily basis. The windows are small in the apartments. Depending on what direction you're facing, you may get little to no sunlight. Very close to a couple bus lines, and it's an easy location to bike to/from campus.

I would recommend; It is a bit pricey in my opinion but close to Howard!

They are very quick to respond to any problems with the apartment. It is very close to campus driving (maybe 7 - 10 minutes at most.

It's Real Meh...

The Cloisters is not the best apartment, nor the worst. It has its upsides and its downsides. First, the upsides: friendly concierge service, nice lobby, decent looking apartments with large windows, close enough to Metro and restaurants, clean pool, quiet neighbors and in the location is great. Now the downsides: gym that's been taken over by a live-in trainer, a leasing office staff that is not on the same page about specials or availability, and the cheapest appliances and cabinets you could possibly have in a borderline "luxury apartment". We've lived here for one year and have chosen not to renew our lease. I can't endorse living here, but I'm not going to fault you for living here if you get a good deal during one of their promotions.

Historic Spot

This historic residence, existing on the campus of the world's premier research institution - the NIH, is a humble abode for those committed to research and willing to live in close proximity to their laboratories. The building, constructed in the early 1920's, initially served as a housing facility for the nuns who used to reside on campus. It now houses nearly 50-55 fellows in comfortable settings that are both modern and historic, with a metro stop just minutes away.

Best price

It was the best price we could find in the area for 3 people, definitely not the best in terms of infrastructure or community feeling. Clean, new carpets and paint, management not the most friendly. It is close to the metro and near a restaurant/bookstore area, and not a far drive from union station or u street. I tried not walking home during the night because it is a little dark and isolated

Amazing price in up and coming neighborhood

It's a great apartment for the price- the kitchen is a little smaller than we hoped for but $1800 a month for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom in DC is amazing! Pet rent is only $30 a month and there are a ton of pet owners there. Family friendly, and 10-15 min walk to Brookland Metro (which has a bunch of new restaurants in the area). Management can sometimes drop the ball on things but overall the customer service is ok. Very quiet, pretty area and the price is right!
